Question about portable players

Are there players with high quality differences or is capacity all that matters like I have a 32 gb iphone 4 for instance is that like the best possible portable ipod/mp3 player using earbuds/headphones?

Players like the Korean Cowon player offer higher quality components and a better DAC along with FLAC file usage.

The Zune HD is also quite good, but the Cowon is typically more sough after by audiophiles.

Some recent phones have decent wolfson DACs in them and allow FLAC to be played, so they're not that bad.

Would not recommend using cheap-o apple ear buds for music listening.

The Iphones and iPods have line-out, so you'll be able to use a dedicated portable DAC if you want better SQ, a dedicated DAC will likely be better than most dedicated audio players or PMPs. That said if you want to keep things lightweight you're better off getting an audio player with good sound quality like a Cowon S9 or J3. The Sansa Fuze and Clip+ also use decent Wolfson DACs if I recall correctly and they're pretty well received as portable music players. As far as Zunes go I've heard the 80GB (and 120) had the best sound quality.

Personally, I recommend the Cowon J3. Freakishly lightweight and portable, classy, great sound quality, EQ control with several features, SDHC slot (I have a 32GB SDHC card in my 8GB J3), days upon days of battery life. Oh, and the J3 is very capable at driving headphones and can probably handle most full-sized headphones with ease. It gets my recommendation if you're looking for a new device.

If you want a smartphone with good sound I've heard the Galaxy S has great sound quality with some EQ app. Though given the battery life of most phones I probably wouldn't recommend one for audio.
