What is wuauclt.exe?

Thread Starter
I'm on my girlfriend's home pc, and whenever it gets rebooted, either from a shutdown or just a restart, it takes over an hour for it to settle down and not take 10-15 minutes to open something simple like Firefox. I checked msconfig and the only thing enabled to run at startup is the kaspersky(yuck) her parents installed, as it's the home pc that everyone uses. So I left that alone, and started checking processes. I noticed wuauclt.exe running and its taking p over 110k system resources, but after about an hour, it disappears out of the process list without me killing it. I googled it, and saw that it was something that checked for updates for Windows 2000, and read a couple of other posts elsewhere that it was a class b trojan. Anyone know what this thing is, and maybe why their Kaspersky hasn't nailed it if it's a trojan?

Edit: They are running Windows XP Pro 64 bit SP2
Edit2: Whoops, I lied, they're running SP3. Teach me to listen to other people without checking myself. jealoussmiley.gif

Only useful information I got out of there was the only way to really fix it is to disable Windows Update.

Try this then:

(Windows key + R) >"services.msc">find Auto-updates> right-click> Properties> and set it (first tab) not to launch automatically. (You may get some warning at startup).
