AMD FX and AM3 boards

Thread Starter
Hey, i havent been around for a while, i havent been keeping up with the news.

I got the mobo in the sig rig, my question is, would an FX run on it? or on any am3 board 7 series?

I am sure there are a lot of threads where this question is asked, i searched a bit for a few mins, i dont really have the time right now to go through pages and pages.

Anyway, thank you.

if there is a BIOS that says it will Support fx, then sure.

if not, no.

even some am3 boards that have a BIOS that claims to support fx do not work. (for example crosshair IV)

My old Mobo was a 7XX chipset the 78LMT-S2P. Claimed to support 81XX series when I bought it but later they changed it to only support 8100.
But didnt work very well even running a 8120 at 8100 speeds.

Better to just get a board knowen to work or stick to a 1090T chip.

AM3 CPUs work on AM3 and AM3+ motherboards.
AM3+ CPUs work on AM3+ motherboards and eventually if AMD doesnt screw up, AM4 too (in 1 or 2 years)

It is like this since AM2 i think and your best bet is to stick with it.

http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=M3A770DE

It states there on the CPU list, only up to Thuban.

Some 7-series Chipset Mobo's were re-released with the official AM3+ socket, same for some 8-series.

Ultimately, what is your need for new power, and what do you want to do?

The best you could get in your current Mobo is a Thuban, but you've got an un-heatsinked 4+1 that may not be able to handle the Thuban OC'd.

Do you need more threads for rendering, do you need more actual power?

The Bulldozer chips aren't really shining in their prime as yet, this may change with Windows 8, and the next revision of the chips. They have great overclocking potential, but with the software we have currently and the power consumption, the architecture isn't really shining just yet.

What do you really need to upgrade for?

If it's just a more poweful gaming rig, you'd be better investing in a second 460 (SLI Hack?) or just selling that and getting a more powerful single GPU. Your 955 at 4.1GHz will do just dandy for a while yet, if that's the case.

unless there is a bios update that is specifically for the FX series cpu, its not going to support it.

there isnt going to be an am4. the next socket will be FM2.

ASRock sucks when it comes to updating the cpu support list..... Get a ZOSMA OR THUBAN cpu.

FM2 is for the APU's, not CPU's.

Yeah AM2+ is for fusion APU's, high end ones with several cpu cores. While AM3+ will support non fusion based chips (no gpu) with the same cpu cores as the FM2 chips.

At least that was my understanding of the roadmap...
