Another thing to consider is would you be doing both from the same hard drive? This could seriously affect performance with both trying to constantly access the drive. Also this really wouldn't be case of RAM limiting you but the cpu. There should be an option in your encoder to set the program to low priority which should help a bit with cpu load.

As it is right now, I can't render a video and game with acceptable performance. i can render 2-3 videos simultaneously with only the added negative of long render times. I was wondering if getting 8GB would allow me to render + game simultaneously. Still don't have a clear answer.

As I previously said: "it's limited elsewhere (disk IO operations for example)."

I'd first limit your encoding application affinity to leave ~2 CPU's available for your game.

Once you do this you can alt tab and check your memory utilization. If you have significant swap activity or your utilization is >85% you will likely notice a smoother experience with additional RAM.

The suggestion to limit the encoder and leave a couple of cores available for games is a good one, as in the case of x264 and most modern encoders, it will max as many cores as you have available by default.

However, HD video encoding is not only CPU intensive, its disk intensive as it has to both read the source file and write to the destination file, and it does this constantly frame by frame throughout the encoding process.

If you limit your encoder to leave a couple of cores free, and you encode on a seperate drive to the one you're playing your game from, performance might improve for you.

In this case though RAM is not the limiting factor.

Sure, there shouldn't be a RAM problem. I have yet to see my RAM usage in task manager go beyond about 60% on my 8GB kit (and that's even considering I set up a 2GB RAM Disk). IIRC, when I was playing cyrsis warhead within the last week, it used about 1.1GB of RAM (keeping in mind, I'm playing at 1280x1024).

As others said, the only issue might be CPU usage--but just manually assign cores in task manager to the encoding software and to the games, and you shouldn't have much of a problem--other than heat, perhaps.

Yes the media is almost always on the barracuda drives, and my main drive is the 640 GB. I'll try running some benches to see how much RAM/CPU usage each program is running.
