6950 2gb Flex - Overclock, vs unlock vs flash - what do I do??? - Page 2

headscratch.gif The Sapphire HD-6950 FLeX edition card is NOT suppose to have the DUAL BIOS switch on it ?

Anyway you can take a PIC of that and show us here ?

Only the NEW special BF3 edition HD-6970 FLeX Sapphire card is suppose to have a dual performance Bios,

but your HD-6950 FLeX isn't suppose to have one that I knew of ? you would have to FLASH that card to attempt the 6970 UnLock.

Wow ... no way ... just learned it does ... however ...

Look closely and you will spy the BIOS-toggling switch that's a hallmark of the Radeon HD 69xx cards. Flicking it over does nothing on this card, though the possibility exists, however uncertain, that it can be unlocked and flashed to a faster Radeon HD 6970 part.

Right.

Copy both BIOS if you want to.

Shutdown PC, flip to Position #1, restart PC and copy the BIOS using GPU-Z. Do the same for position #2.

The backup (Failsafe) BIOS will not allow you to flash. So you can't make any mistake there. If position #1 is no go, just flip it to position #2 to flash.

Sound right?

I've just got this sapphire and has the dual bios on it:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=754336&SRCCODE=LSCAN&cm_mmc_o=-ddCjC1bELltzywCjC-d2CjCdwwp&AffiliateID=M4w4lFcgKio-Ivl4..cK0_e3Q7vSksoyEg

Not only it has the switch, but turning it on unlocks dormant shaders without having to flash !biggrin.gif

Proly because it is my birthday.

Happy B-Day & congrats thumbsupsmiley.png but you have the DIRT3 Edition ... it's widely known the TOXIC and DIRT3 editions had the DUAL BIOS switch on them, this was the first for me to learn the FLeX edidtion might also come with the DUAL BIOS Switch as well ... though from what I'm reading in that HEXUS review above, while we know the TOXIC & DIRT3 eidtions actually HAVE a 2nd BIOS on the card from the factory, and it may or may-not Unlock your 6970 shaders .... it appears that on the FLeX edition there is NO 2nd BIOS on the card itself from the factory, you'd have to FLASH one onto the card yourself, but at least with TWO BIOS chips and the Switch this makes this option MUCH SAFER than trying to flash a single BIOS card w/o the switch. Yet another GOOD product choice from Sapphire in the HD-6950 card class ... they have some of the BEST HD-6950's on the market.

Here's the guide I followed:
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1608/4/
Also note that your bios switch must be in the #2 position (furthest away from the crossfire connector) for this to work. Overall, it worked out great. You will probably have to do the command line commands - atiwinflash -unlockrom 0 and then atiwinflash -f -p 0 'modded 6950 bios file'.
Also, was able to get the stock 6970 clocks on stock voltage.
If you need any help, let me know.

Tried following the guide...but the flash didn't affect the shaders. Tried going into the command prompt and entered (at the default prompt that came up): atiwinflash -unlockrom 0

I pressed enter and got an error saying
"atiwinflash is not recognized as an internal or external command"

not sure what to do...

Try flip the switch to another position to flash, if it doesn't unlock the shaders, the GPU core is laser cut.

Tried other position and couldn't do it using winflash by itself...got an error.

Trying through RBE...getting an error about wrong card or something. Should I switch it from a 6950 to 6970 in the Sub Vendor Video Card ID section? I'm just trying to use a modified BIOS that has the shaders unlocked...

Your card WON'T UNLOCK ... sorry, but the odds were against you from the start.

SUCCESSFUL UNLOCK RATES :

ORIGINAL REFERENCE HD-6950's = about 90% +/-

Sapphire TOXIC HD-6950 = about 66-75%

MSI PE/OC TwinFrozr III HD-6950 2GB = about 50-66%

Sapphire DIRT3 Edition HD-6950 = about 33-50%

MOST OTHER CARDS w/ DUAL BIOS* = about 25-33%  * This includes your card

ALL OTHER HD-6950's using FLASH attempts = less than 20%

Like Ken1649 mentions MOST current HD-6950's have either the GPU Laser Cut and/or the BIOS is Factory Disabled from being altered. In other words it's LOCKED !

There are a few exceptions, like I've listed above and a few others I've posted time and time before, and of course you COULD GET LUCKY, but in general, you'll get the results YOU just got if you don't buy one of the cards I've mentioned. You still have a respectable HD-6950, and that's what you PAID for, if you wanted 100% guaranteed HD-6970 performance, you need to buy a 100% HD-6970, really that simple.

TL:DR:
Just overclock your card to 6970 levels, keep the voltage under 1.2v for 24/7 use (I'm at 1.19 happily), and enjoy.

Again, follow the link, realize that the unlock is rather insignificant in context, and just happily overclock your card. A stock 1408shaders 6950 overclocked to 6970 levels performs at like 97% of a 6970.

Core and Memory speed ARE the difference!!

Just overclock and enjoy.
