Recommendation for new GPU

Thread Starter
I have my sig rig and am looking to upgrade my GPU in order to play Skyrim with not so much max graphics, but to keep it from being so laggy/crappy frame rates. Can anyone suggest a decent yet cheap upgrade that also won't be a total bottleneck to my CPU/mobo...???

Thanks!

I don't think you'll be able to find a good value of graphics power-to-price without upgrading your motherboard, CPU, and memory.

A Phenom x4 paired with 4gb of memory in 2x2 format would give you plenty of headroom for a new graphics card.
For graphics I recommend a GTX460 1gb (or 2gb if you feel you would need it). Both can be had for a fairly low price, usually less than $120.

Define cheap?

Perhaps a 6850 is in order for $120 or less. 6870 if you can swing it, especially since they come in around that price AR nowadays.

GTX 460 1GB is a great choice too. The GTX 460 will see no benefit from the 2GB version though without SLI, which defeats the point of a cheap upgrade.

Though to be perfectly honest that CPU will still hold the 6870 or GTX 460 back.. it's really dated. The moment you upgrade the GPU your CPU will be the bottleneck.

Cheap as in ~$150 or less. I just need a stop-gap sort of card to hold me off til I can justify a new rig (well, justify in terms of extra money).

I would have got a 6850 like this. $130 after rebates.

Why not look at a GTX560 Ti, ok slighty out of your budget by about $10-$15, but when time to upgrade your chip n board go SLI, that is what I would do 2cents.gif

Wish me luck...

I don't mean to be blunt here but that is a bad card. It's just a 5770 with a new bios update, the only difference is it supports hdmi 1.4a, other than that it's a plain 5770.

GTX460 would kill that thing - for less money as well.

I like blunt. Besides I returned it. Got it at Best Buy just because I wanted it NOW. I will look into other options and just be patient til it gets here. Besides I have a $25 gift card to Newegg. I am also an ATI fanboy, btw...

Alright. Looks like you know what you're doing, I thought you just went out and grabbed the first thing you saw.
For ATI I think a 6850 or 6870 would be a good fit for you, if your budget can stretch just a little more.
