AMD 960T INFO

Thread Starter
HELLO,

i was looking around and noticed that the 960T can be unlocked to a 6 core.can anyone tell me why they are locked in the first place?are they unstable? or is there something wrong with them thats why they are locked?any info about this cpu would be helpful.what is everyone experience like when they are unlocked.
cores are generally locked because, for some reason or other, they did not meet quality standards.

often people still manage to unlock them and get them to work with a little voltage increase, but this is not always the case.

They are disabled for some reason, but they actually increase a performance...

Usually locked because one of the cores failed in a test. As previously stated though some extra voltage often takes care of that, however not always.

For instance my dual core unlocked to 4 core. one of the extra cores was completely unstable so I run with a 3 core. thats still 50% gain for nothing. Needed a decent amount of extra volts though for that 3rd core and reduced my max overclock by 200MHz.

Sometimes they also lock off cores when they dont have enough 4 or 2 core CPUs for sale in which case you can unlock them and they will work fine as a 4 or 6 core (depending on model).

If you want a gauranteed 6 core then buy one. If you are happy with the 4 core but want a shot at getting extra two for nothing get the 960T. Just dont be unhappy of it does not work out that you will get the extra cores. thumb.gif

what is the average OC with the 960t?and if i got one and left it at a 4 core and over clocked it would it be faster then the other 4 core phenoms?if not what is the fastest 4 core amd has after it is over clocked.

is the 3 core faster then your 2 core at 200Mhz less? would i be able to OC the 960t to around 4ghz?also what is the average oc when you have all six core unlocked?if i dont need the 6 cores after unlocked could i disable them?or am i stuck with them once unlocked?

all the chips are similar architecture, so if ou want more threads you go for more cores, if you want faster you go for more mhz.

you can disable the cores again later if you don't want them.

the 960t is based on Thuban, so it's the most developed Phenom arch (it has a better IMC), it has lower TDP than Deneb cores. it should hit 4ghz easier than a Deneb and at less voltage.

if you're buying AMD right now, go for the 960t.

My 960T Unlocked to 6core without tweaking any voltage.

It's realy a good question why they come locked. I assume that motherboard plays a role too, for example, my processor might not work as a 6core with other mobos.
If you want to buy a 960T, dont even think about the 6core thing, just make sure that you will be ok with the stock performance, which is great, better imc, low tdp etc.
It's also best choice over the 955 that people sometimes suggest.
And when you finally buy it you can try to unlock and if ur lucky, u might come up with a 5core or 6core smile.gif

it's not low TDP, when you unlock your cpu it becomes 125W/140W TDP cpu.

now assuming i get the amd 960T and i cant unlock the extra cores.would i still be able to overclock it?would i be able to get the 960T cpu to around 3.8-4.0ghz. with proper cooling of course.and the amd 955 and 970 are higher clocked then the 960t,so wouldn't i have a better chance to hit 3.8-4ghz with them?and if all 3 where clocked at 3.8ghz would they all be equal or does one chip have something extra the others don't.
