Upgrade from aging Radeon HD 5770.

Thread Starter
Greetings, I wish to replace my current Radeon HD 5770 with something that will be able to get a good 60FPS + on Battlefield 3 and Skyrim at maximum settings, resolution is 1440 x 900, am planning to get 1650 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200 screen. Currently, my 5770 will only just get 25 to 30 FPS if I max out everything on Battlefield 3 and that's with a resolution of 1240 x 1024. (Yeah, I know, 1240 x 1024 is nothing, I'm missing out and such)

Now for me, getting two Radeon HD 6850s is £30 (~$48 USD) more than a single GTX 560Ti. Two 6850s in crossfire have the same performance as a single GTX 580, which costs nearly twice as much... owned by UK prices frown.gif

Would it be a wise decision to get two Radeon HD 6850s? I know the warnings about running 16x and 4x slots for crossfire, but the evidence always shows a very small performance decrease when running at 4x/4x. For example in this video (at the end), the R HD 6990 is running at 2x/2x because of the bandwidth splitter in the card, and only loses around 100 points in 3D mark 11 and that's vs. a 16x slot, meaning 8x/8x: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSfifE2Domo

p.s. I am aware that there were some performance issues for Crossfire and SLI in Battlefield 3 but I think this has been fixed, if not then they will be by the time I get a new graphics card(s)

Those games are more cpu intensive so upgrading your graphics card might not do so much, I know because I also have a 5770 and I'm getting much fps at a higher resolution than you. You might want to upgrade both your cpu and gpu if you really want higher frames.

I don't think a quad core CPU is holding him back in any game really....

I wouldn't buy something hoping it will get fixed. I would go with what works now.

perhaps 6950?

6950s a no go for me, same price as two 6850s (~£200) and getting one involves cutting into the Hard Drive holder thingy in my case.

Plus, lookie at the performance difference:

maybe go for a 560ti and get another one when you can afford it if that's an option, sli tends to work better than crossfire imo 8x/8x>16x/4x

but if you cant do that the 6850 xfire should be fine, (just get ones from good manufacturers)

I know my reply won't be very popular...but I'd just get another 5770 for cheap and Xfire.
It comes very close to a 5870, and while that can't max BF3, it should run it fairly for quite a bit cheaper than most of the other suggestions.

I know everyone says this, but crossfire and SLI suffer from micro-stutter issues. That's an issue doesn't show up on benchmarks: 50fps on crossfire 6850s, for example, might look worse than 30 on a 6950.

As for the 16x/4x issue, that's not a problem. It only becomes a minor problem with huge multi card setups at crazy resolutions: most of the crossfire/SLI stuff happens in the crossfire/sli bridge directly between the cards.

Nevertheless, I'm nearly maxing Skyrim at 720p and 1080p on a single 6850. Unless you absolutely have to max BF3, just buy another 5770 now and wait for the 7970 or 7950 to get cheaper. It should be well worth the wait.

Since I built this rig I planned on upgrading one piece every year (unless one part is in major need of replacing e.g. in 3 years time 4GB RAM may not be enough), and have a budget of £200 whenever I do this. Getting a 560TI that means not upgrading any other parts for 2 years.... hmm... Plus, excluded from the £200 budget is a new screen to think about, which I MAY get.
Dual 6850s are starting to look really tempting, so I'll think I'll go for that.

How's everyone's experiences with Powercolour & their coolers? In particular the one linked in the first post.

-Edit-

Yeah, never thought of microstutter, I'll look for some videos on that

-Edit again-

Well, other Nixuz's comment appeared a while after brucethemoose's so it now appears like the majority is recommending a second 5770 for now... Seems pointless because the cheapest 5770 I can find around now is ~ £80 to £100, the £80 being a single slot cooler. Considering my £200 budget it would seem wasteful to get another 5770....

I'll see how it goes in January. By then 6850 prices may drop, but I don't know for sure.

24 hour bump.

Got messaged by a mod, so I know that bumps are OK if they are done every 24 hours.

Just to point out...I very much doubt you'll find any single card for $200 or under that will beat a 5770 crossfire setup, and then only marginally.
$80 to nearly double your GPU power Vs. $200 to do the same thing in a single card solution.
But it's obviously your choice and based upon whatever you decide to do AFTER. I personally always try to look a few upgrades down the road if at all possible.
