Help with SLI GTX 460, 3 monitors and Battlefield 3

Thread Starter
So I have a question. My current setup is AMD x6 Phenom II 2.8 mhz, 8 GB of Ram, 2 EVGA GTX 460 in SLI, 3 Acer 22 inch monitors. When I had one monitor I could run battlefield 3 on ultra settings. adding the two other monitors i can only run it on Medium. It just doesnt seem right, that with my specs I wouldn't at least be able to run on High? Something just seems off. I even configured NVIDIA to do the physics processing on the card that is only hosting one monitor to offload the work and still cant run in High mode. I mean am i missing a trick here? or is the game just really that demanding? Any help would be awesome! Thanks! biggrin.gif

When SLIing, only one of the cards video RAM is being used (VRAM doesn't combine as more cards are added.) As more monitors are added, one runs out of video RAM. This results in worse-then-normal gameplay.

GTX 460's only have 1GB of Video RAM, I alone use 1GB of Video memory at ultra settings at 1680x1050 resolution. With 3 monitors your resolution will be way higher so you're going to be limited by your video memory.

Seems fine..... to have 3 monitors on ultra would require more fire power...

all the vram is used, it's just that the data stored is mirrored so addressing space doesn't increase...

with that said, when using THREE monitors, you're pushing 3 times the pixels. 3 times the work is being done more or less...

it's to be expected. Adding on physx DOES NOT HELP because it takes horsepower from the videocards... It's not like one card does work on two monitors and the other on one, the load is split up more or less evenly.

I thought I read GTX 480. I'm surprised you got Ultra on one monitor with a GTX 460!

No, that sounds about right. You would pretty much have to divide your frame rate that you got on one monitor, by three. Your cards have to process about three times the load now, and they only have a third of the vram per monitor (about 682mb) which is not even close to enough to run on high.

Really? Only One of the cards VRAM is being used? That just does not make sense... I mean Why would they design the SLI to work like that. Does Crossfire work like that? Limiting to only one card? I mean I guess I see still being able to use the other card for power (ie GPU) but you would think the memory would scale as well.

Whats the point then really? I mean the 460 is really not that old of a card. lol about a year old maybe now. Ugh exhausting. lol

Whats the point then really? I mean the 460 is really not that old of a card. lol about a year old maybe now. Ugh exhausting. lol

read the post above... the memory is being used, it's just being MIRRORED...

as to why - it'd be slower using two cards than using just one if they didn't mirror the data(each card needs to work on the SAME data as the other card, if they split it up you'd have to transfer the data from card to card VERY VERY frequently and this would hurt performance A LOT)
