AMD FX-8150 Overclocking

Thread Starter
About a week a ago i got an email from AMD Nordic and they asked if i want to have FX-8150 sample for overlocking, and i wasnt considered for long!biggrin.gif

So, thanks to AMD Nordic for providing me this AMD FX-8150 sample!thumb.gif

From the beginning this has been like a driving a bike, overclocking is same easy that i get used to with Phenom II's.

All results are done with a mediocre watercooling setup, including following parts:
Aquacomputer Kryos HF (had to wait AMD brackets about an week.. mad.gif, spare part..)
Swiftech MCP35X
Phobya G-Changer
EK-FC580 DCII (cpu and gpu on same circuit)

Hardware:
AMD FX-8150
Asus Crosshair V Formula
Asus GTX 580 DCII
G.Skill Ripjaws-X
Corsair HX1000
Dimastech Easy V2.5 benchtable

testilaite.jpg

While testing ambient temperature was all the time between 23-24 degrees celcius.
And here some results, first quick prime95 test to show how high 24/7 clocks we can achieve with these:

amdprime95.jpg

And other benchmarks:

amd3dmark06.jpg

amdvantage.jpg

amdcinebench.jpg

amdpifast.jpg

amdsuperpi1m.jpg

amdsuperpi32m.jpg

amdwprime32.jpg

amdwprime1024.jpg

amdx264.jpg

I was surprised how well these FX's overclock! After intel launched sandy bridge, i havent even touched to AMD, so this was definitely great experience!

Too bad that single core performance isn't that good, usually losing to Phenom II. But anyway, there is potential in this Bulldozer architecture, it just need more optimizing.

Once again, ty AMD Nordic, and thank you for reading! I hope you liked!smile.gif

I will definitely be upgrading next to bulldozer. I Do a lot of encoding and to me this is a is a good great CPU even with its shortcomings. I cant make myself build a Intel system dont care how much better it performs. Just my opinion.

Very nice results mate! Looks sexy. I am not sure if voltages above 1,5 are wise. But hey, it is not my CPU and these clocks look like real fun! So keep going and torture this little bugger a bit more tongue.gif and thumb.gif

Anyone know how it, (OC'd @5G) compares to an overclocked Sandy Bridge? That is what,... a 40% increase?

I too am refusing to go Intel, My 8150 is on it's way, my CHV is screaming for it!!!

All this talk about being "Impossible" to have below ambient temps has me thinking....thinking.gif....

Heat is transferred by conduction, convection and radiant exchange, yes?
The flow of heat from one body at higher temperature to another body at a lower temperature, until the two temperatures are equal, yes?

Ever touch metal in the room.. its colder than the ambient temperature! Now add some air flow to increase the heat exchange, or if your using fluid, sub-cooled liquid, which becomes below ambient temps and then pass it over the CPU.....
.......wouldn't that make it possible to have temps below ambient??

Just a thought.....

Ever touched water at your body temperature? Ill give you a hint its almost cold for you.
That happens because it conducts heat faster than air does.
So what is happening with the metal is that its actually at ambient temperature, you touch it and it seems cold because it is drawing heat from your body faster than the air giving you the illusion of cold.
Im not a born english speaker but I studied what you said in High School and tried to explain it the best I could, but the thing is: You cannot go below ambient temperature without exterior help: dry ice etc.
You need something that is cold enough to draw the heat the CPU produces in order to keep it cold, and the flow of heat in it is good enough to absorb the heat from the CPU, transfer it to some other place where its supposed to be cooler.
This is what happens with the best performing air coolers and with custom water cooling.
Noctua D14/Silver Arrow/212+ etc transfers the heat from the base(the part that contacts with the cpu) through the copper(very good material to transfer heat, only one I know better than it is gold) to the fins which will "receive" the heat and with the help of the air going through them will lower the temp of the fins.

Another example put a piece of plastic inside your fridge and a bottle of water. Come back the next day and hold both in your hands, which one is cooler?
