Sli gtx 580?

Thread Starter
I have recently purchased the gtx 580, although I'm very happy with It, I was contemplating getting another. Is there any point me having sli with these cards or should I just look at overclocking the one I have ? And If the overclock is the way to go do I need better cooling?

Which model do you have? What kind of monitor and res are you going to be playing at?

I have this model. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130587

I had 2 of these in SLI, playing on an Apple 30 in monitor with 2560x1600 res.

If you plan on gaming on something with very high resolution, then I would say yes, get 2. If you don't plan on gaming that high, one is absolutely fine. I currently play BF3 on Ultra settings with 1920x1200 res on the 30 inch. I average around 60 FPS with the one GTX 580.

Another point is that I couldn't get the 580's to over clock very well. Since I have sold the other one, I have actually been able to over clock the single. My current over clock is 900/1800/2100.

In my opinion, one 580 is fine for now.

Not sure how good of a card this actually is ?

From what you have said I won't be playing in a high enough res to justify two, what are your temps like since you have overclocked?

depends on the games you like to play. bf3 needs x2 580's to get 60+FPS on Ultra.

What monitor resolution do you use and at what settings for your games? If you're not using the highest of the highest settings, a single GTX 580 is fine. If you have two in SLI, you'll be able to play at the highest of the highest settings at 1920 x 1200 or less, and your Minimum FPS will increase by 33%.

I find this slightly hard to believe, can you elaborate as there must be something I'm missing in your settings or your measurement etc.

A single 580 is under 60 FPS average on BC2 @ 2560x1600 Max Quality 4xAA, and I'm sure BF2 is much more taxing.
33830.png
Throw in minimum frame rates with a single 580 on 2560x1600 same settings, and this is where I start to question your results:
33833.png

Personally I find a possible minimum of 30-40 fps much too low, so that is why I have two 580s. However I haven't gotten around to picking up my U3011 yet, so I'm still on 1920x1080. I'd say two 580's is money poor spent on 1920x1080 currently, unless you're not worried about money...then it's awesome thumb.gif

For 1920x1080 one 580 is more than enough for the majority of titles, unless higher minimum frames are important to you.

Strange, on one 1920x1200 120hz monitor I'm getting 60-70 FPS in BF3 Ultra Settings with 4xMSAA 'on' with just one GTX 580 with slight 13% over clock I keep 24/7 with stock voltage.

@ OP - when you post it's a good idea to have your specs listed. When asking a GPU question if we don't know your - monitor resoltuion or PSU we can't really give good advice that pertains to you. Your asking if one GTX 580 can play games on a monitor we don't know what size and if SLI are needed yet have no idea if your PSU can even handle two in SLI.

Not sure how good of a card this actually is ?
From what you have said I won't be playing in a high enough res to justify two, what are your temps like since you have overclocked?

As for your questions, stay with your current GTX 580 and over clock it to 875/1750/2062 and you'll be getting an even Pixel Fillrate 42.0 GPixel/s - Texture Fillrate 56.0 GTexel/s - Bandwidth 198.0 GB/s. I'm currently on stock 1.0880v to keep that safely 24/7 and my highest temp is 74C even after hours of online gaming in BF3. I do have a manual fan settings grid over the preset auto fan settings with card. You should do same. thumb.gif

486.

Help us help you. wink.gif

Just to give you some insight why there's no need to upgrade to a second GTX 580 just yet, I posted some benches. Wait until after Kepler comes out. Pricing will drop and you'll get a better deal on the second. After Kepler comes out your best move for highest performance gains when gaming does catch up will be SLI it down the road. A GTX 580 SLI is a beast of a set up with no other dual card set up giving it rival. I know your doing fine with just the one right now.

In the mean time here is a graph that will show you both 1920x1200 and 2560x1600 resolution with Ultra Settings 4xMSAA on benchmarks with stock clocks. On Techspot as of Oct 28th after BF 3 final release.

Newest driver currently in beta 285.79 are showing even more gains in FPS with those testing it in BF3.

Here's another current relevant game to compare further. November 11, 2011 Modern Warefare 3 final release benchmarks with Max Qaulity 4xAA on again stock clocks. Techspot Review Conclusion.
