Why is the new OCN so taxing on CPU/RAM

Thread Starter
So I like the new look of OCN but it is constantly using 50% of the CPU and up to 400mb of ram while viewing things and the ram seems to constantly become more and more.. Also pages seem to take a good 10seconds to load and the pages are super wide like i can scroll 10x my screen size to the right. Am I just missing something or have a certain setting wrong?

Nope, you're seeing it right - we're aware that client load can be pretty extreme in some cases and the development team is actively pursuing ways to reduce that. (There is actually an engineer dedicated full-time to isolating what cases the extreme load for some users). Please hang in there!

As far as the long-scroll to the right - that isn't correct. Are you running any browser addons?

Hmm, it might help to clear out your cache just for mental reasons.

Afterwards go into: Profile > Edit Account Settings [it's off to the right of your avatar within your profile] > Scroll down to the "Forum Preferences" subsection > Check on "Constrain Threads to Constant Width"

Give that a try, it *should* fix that extreme right scrolling problem ^^

Also, as Chipp noted, it is being worked on, and knowing what browser you're on and whatever addons that might be conflicting would be helpful. Lastly, try browsing without addons / limited addons to sniff out the bad addon that might be causing your issue.

Thanks for the very helpful replies! And I will try to clear cache and see if that does anything but I already have constrain threads to constant width checked already… Just to give some more help and feedback when the page loads whether it’s a single thread/topic or the list of threads the screen will be normal size but after I start scrolling down or even just let the screen stay in its originally loaded position for a few seconds it will then become quite massive out to the right.
As for the browser I’m using IE 7 (don’t laugh…. At work they don’t believe in updates rolleyes.gif).

I don't get it? My computer has absolutely no problems with the new layout whatsoever. My CPU usage barely registers while on the site...

I've noticed some lag on my Touchpad that wasn't there before, but I don't think I've noticed much on my desktop with Chrome. Looks good!

Correct. There's only so much a small team of beta testers can do, unfortunately. Our main job was just make sure you guys were able to browse the forum and post as you normally would. So rather than a certain group of testers, we had 900+ members posting and doing as they normally would, very easy to find bugs if any. The majority of the bugs and issues that have been reported are already fixed. There are more & more changes every day.
