I like that idea, as well as having 2 flow sensors, with one being 1/2 way through the loop, seeing if another pump or more powerful one is necessary. It would also let us know if restrictions began to change the flow rate. I worry due to all of the h2o blocks and fittings that I have, that a single mcp 350 will be okay. I have been told not to put a 2nd pump 1/2 way through the loop due to failure of 1 causing a blockage, but I would parallel it anyway... Any ideas fellas?

It doesn't make any difference where abouts you put flow meters and pumps in a loop.

Flow rate of a system is a result of your total pump pressure vs total restriction. Water is essentially incompressible so it does not start out fast at the pump and slow down at the end.

Flow meters measure volume over time, not speed. Water can't move at a higher volume in one part of a loop to another.

Understand that water's temp and pressure is consistent through the loop, but there must be a way to detect blocks that restrict flow much more than others. they all won't just magically even out and have the same restrictions. I was just trying to have more knowledge, also in reference to particle buildup and pins collecting grudge and slime, slowing it even further. There must be a way to find if my southbridge water blck restricts flow much more or less than the 80 dollar cpu block as well as my black ice triple 120 with a much higher concentration of tubing and fins, to the swiftech dual 140 quiet power which has much less density on tubing and fin count.

Well you can just test an individual water blocks restriction by running it in a loop by itself with a pump at a certain setting and comparing the flow rate you get compared to other blocks. Its not scientific, but will give you an idea of the relative restriction of each block you have.

Water pressure is not uniform in a loop, it starts high at the pump and gets lower after each restriction, flow rate however is uniform throughout the loop, it has to be. There is nothing magical about a loop having an overall restriction that determines flow rate.

As far as being able to see the relative restriction of blocks in a loop that is operating, you could use the aquacomputer pressure sensors;

linked to the in and out ports of components. I just don't see the point of doing that. For monitoring the overall flow health of a loop, a flow meter will tell you if restriction goes up over time as blocks clog, you just need to have the Aq5 log flow values and save them, to compare the values over time.

So then, I could just check flow, and after adding a new block, check it again. right? My main concern that started all of this was the pump that I have (mcp350 1t) and the obvious fact that there are both better and worse pumps out there. I am trying to figure it out to either use the blocks that fit my pump the best, or get the pump (or add another) to fit the blocks that I am running. I will learn more as I build more h2o cooled rigs, but it'll take some time. I recently acquired some brand new-but deeply discounted EK h2o blocks that are listed as bridge blocks but I am thinking of using them for other applications if the cooling capability is there. I do know that some restriction is necessary for heat transfer, but a balance between restriction and flow must be found for optimum transfer as well. Hold the water too long and it could damage components, and not long enough won't take enough heat away, again possibly damaging components.I have a feeling that the enzotech sapphire water block that I have isn't in the same league as the EK's or the Swiftech mcw82's that are on the gpu's, just seems a bit lower quality overall. Thank you for all the info and I am going to put a couple internal temp and flow sensors in the loop, 1 of both after the cpu, and 1 of both after the gpu's and see what they read. The h2o that goes through both radiators in sequence before the cpu block attempting to get the h2o as close to ambient as possible before adding heat again,

Because these sensors are based on variable resistance temp sensitive materials there will always be some degree of manufacturing variability.

A decent temperature based controller like the Aquaero allows individual temp sensors to be adjusted with + or - offsets so that all sensors are calibrated to read the same.
