Looking to upgrade from an 8800GTS 320

Thread Starter
I want to upgrade my GPU with something I can buy used for around $100-150. I was hoping I could keep my PSU as well. I don't care if it's ATI or Nvidia, just that it's the best value for the money. What should I get? I would also probably upgrade my CPU to a Q6600, so hopefully there would be minimal bottleneck.

Im selling an ATi 4890, details in sig.

Any flame posts will be reported. Just because this card may not do DX11, its still a huge upgrade from the 8800.

A 460, 6850, and 6870 (if you can find a cheap one) are pretty good cards in terms of bang for the buck. IIRC, the 460 is about equal to the 6850 in performance, and the 6870 is of course stronger than both of those. 460 vs. 6870 (AnandTech benchmarks @ stock)

I've seen the MSI 460 Hawk go for $125-130AR on Newegg and NCIXus, if that helps (used 460s also tend to go for a good price). 6850s are around the same price point. 6870s would be at the top end of your budget, at around $155-170 AR.

How much improvement will the 6870 give me vs the 4890 considering I DO NOT have pcie x2 and that I'll only have a q6600 to go along with it? Also will my PSU handle it?

Your PSU can do the job easily. As for performance:
700

According to this thread, The 6870 draws significantly less power than the 4890 when both are OC'ed.

6870 OC'ed: 181W
4890 OC'ed: 241W

Whether the power efficiency and performance are worth an extra $50 is up to you. smile.gif

I do realize it's faster, but will it be faster for me considering my motherboard is not capable of PCIE 2.0? Or will it still outperform the 4890 by that much even with my bottleneck?

Also, my PSU only has two 18A rails. Still enough?

:thinking.gif: you could get a NEW 6870 or 6790 with that budget..(6790=cheaper) either would be a FANTASTIC upgrade..

My bad, thought you were concerned with only having one PCIE slot redface.gif

PCIE 1.x will be fine, since (someone correct me if I'm wrong) it's basically the same as PCI-E 2.0 8x, which only has a difference when SLI'ing/CF'ing top tier GPUs (around 5% less performance). So you won't have to worry about a bottleneck.
A guy in this thread went from 1.x to 2.x with a 6870 and experienced no difference: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/263420-29-6870-pcie
Seems to be quite a few people who are running their 6870s in PCI-E 1.0 slots.

As for power, I've read that the 6870 draws around 12.5A on the 12v rail, so your PSU should be fine. In addition, plenty of reviewers on Newegg have used those 550w Rosewill PSUs for a 4870 or 4890. Sorry this is all anecdotal. I'll try to find you some hard specs though, if you want.
