$1500 build for a friend

Thread Starter
I haven't built a computer in a while, but here's the shopping list I've put together as a first draft. I wanted some of your input on this.

Case: Antec 300
Mobo: Asus 880G
GFX: Radeon HD 6950
PSU: Corsair 750TX
CPU: AMD X4 965
CPU Cooler: Corsair H50
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws 2x4GB DDR3 1600
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
Keyboard: Logitech K750 Wireless solar-powered
Monitor: Acer 20" LCD
CD Drive: Lite-On SATA
Speakers: Logitech Z623

Comes out to ~$1300
Only component he doesn't need is a mouse.

That CPU Will bottleneck the GPU. Might as well get a 2500k if it's for gaming, or 2600k if its for video/encoding. You'll also need a new MOBO, i'd suggest a P67 Pro, and some Corsair vengence ram thumb.gif
post #3 of 12
Things to consider to fix:
1. Fix your CPU cooler. A Noctua NH-D14 performs better than an H50, I think.
2. With that extra money, fix your CPU. You should get a Phenom II X6 for your friend with the extra $200.
3. Fix your memory with that extra money, too. For $43, you can get high performance Corsair Vengeance memory (8GB at 1600 MHz, too!).
4. Fix your graphics card. Unless you care about an extra 10 MHz with on the HIS card, get an additional two free games with this XFX dual-fan model. It includes Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Shogun 2 for free!

Everything else's fine. smile.gif

With a budget like that, I would totally recommend you to go get a sandy bridge setup for your friend.
For $1500 there is no way you should build something like that.

Here is a build that can beat any game on the market on MAX settings on BF3 or Crysis 2.

Build with i5-2500k and with the possibility of SLI 580s in the future.

Case:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066

CPU/motherboard combo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.764511

CPU Cooler:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065

Video Card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130587

Ram:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145345

SSD:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148441

HDD w/ free DVD burner:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148767

PSU:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207011

Total: $1400 w/ shipping and before $60 rebates.

I do recommend him hold off the HDD right now, or if he has extra one around, its really bad time to buy a HDD right now due to shortages and high prices.

I wouldn't go for the Noctua NH-D14, it's price does not match it's performance.

I highly recommend the NZXT HAVIK over the Noctua. This comes from personal experience as my recent build is using the NZXT.

Don't listen to pwndupure, the CPU will not bottleneck the GPU since most games these days are GPU dependent.

I build $1000 - $2000 systems all the time. I wouldn't recommend AMD atm for a $1500 rig. I'm a AMD guy but their recent performance is lacking. Even if you feel adamant about building a AMD rig, the least you could do is get a AM3+ mobo.

For keyboard and mouse I would recommend the Logitech MK710, you can grab it at your local Costco, if you have one, for $49.99. Battery will last 3 years on both keyboard AND mouse.

All in one water cooling on a 965 BE? Save yourself the trouble and get a HSF.

For case go with NZXT H2

You can always add another HD 6870 for $150 - 170 and get pretty much the best performance right now without spending ridiculous amounts of money.

You'll notice a minor difference in performance in just the 1GB model of the 6870. You can get 2 HD 6870s for less than the price of one GTX 570.

Just get a HDD later. It's ludicrous to spend $100+ on a HDD right now.

I generally agree with most the items but I have to say 1920x1080 on a 27" in a big no-no.

The limit to 1920x1080, imo, is at 24". Reason is it's a computer monitor and not a HDTV. Computer monitors are designed for near field viewing, 27" is stretching it. The only 27" I would get is one with 2560x1440 resolution.
