Gaming build with 30" monitor. Please tear apart my plans.. :)

Thread Starter
Hi!

I'm planning to build a new gaming machine to play at 2560 x 1600 on my 30" monitor (Dell 3007WFP). I'll be building this machine next week. Before I order parts, please take a look at what I am thinking of buying and tell me what I should change. smile.gif

Thanks!

CPU: Core i5 2500k
Mobo: Asus P8Z68-V PRO
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8 GB (2 x 4GB)
SSD: Crucial M4 128GB
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB
Videocard: 2x Radeon 6950 2GB
HSF: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
PSU: Corsair CMPSU-850TX 850W.
CD: Lite-On DVD Burner
Case: Cooler Master Storm Sniper mid-tower

Total cost: 1657.92. I'd like to stay under $1800 if possible.

You should add a wc loop into it so you can overclock, then you will bring out the beast.

Get that instead of the hyper

Other than that, looks like you just went round gathering a list of all the best stuff..not really much to change. Although for that budget, you can definitely fit in a Gold rated power supply instead of a Bronze.

Also, don't listen to Pete, typical Bias response.

Make sure you get a couple of sapphir 6950 toxics, they could be unlocked to 6970s, with a flick of a switch! Also, get a corsair h100 cooler, ( it will fit if you take your top exhaust fan out, but if you dont wanna take the ex. fan out, get a h80) and overclock that i5!

mobo/processor = thumb.gif i have same and overclocking is super ez. either use the suite or bios settings. clik of a button in suite and it does wonders.

gpu, im not a amd fan. i will rather have 2x 560 ti

cpu cooler, i want to say noctua nh-d14 but im not sure if that is going to fit in ur mid towe case,, if not go for corsair h80 or h100.

do you really need 2TB?unless there is big price difference, i'll get 1TB and the SSD drive

good luck and post the pictures when you are done thumb.gif

Instead of 2 6950's I would recommend a single gtx 580. It would be about the same price and if at any point down the road you decide you need more power, just add another one in sli and BOOM your back in business. Also if you can hold off on this build for a while, the AMD 7000 series is rumored to launch in january and supposedly it will crush anything on the market spec wise, that is just a rumor though, but it's still something to consider.

I would go with the 69xx over a 580 right now (excluding 3gb models) due to the massive amounts of VRAM some games can draw. I see massive amounts of VRAM used in BF3 @1080 so how bad would it be at 1600?

All else fails, Rumor has it new GPUs are arounf the corner in January.

A small change but I would recommend looking at a HX or AX over the TX PSU. Having semi or full modular really helps cut down on the mess in the case.

It looks pretty solid to me. 6950's are a great value. I suggest you stick with the crucial ssd over anything sandforce based. The m4 is the only ssd worth buying currently imo. The antec 920 is one of the best coolers to stick into tight mid tower cases. It will crush a hyper 212+, but is of course much more expensive. I'd look into some used hdd's or try and hold off completely until the mess in Thailand gets sorted in 6 months or so. Mobo and cpu are pure win. You will be very happy with the performance. Also a solid 750 watt psu will power 2 x 6950's easily. I ran 2 xfx 6970's on my psu flawlessly. I know run 2 gtx 470' s that pull roughly 250w each and have no issues. Congrats on your new build. And if you want 6950's, get em. They're great. I've owned em all, from 560's to 580's and 6970's. Don't let the fan boy bias get to you. thumb.gif
