how much ram does BF3 use - Page 3

Choppy correct me if im wrong. Im not sure that this information is correct, im just interpreting what Choppy is saying, or at least as far as I perceive it.

No, I wasn't mistaken unless he was directing that post towards someone else. The discussion went like this:
-post: people need to post their actual BF3 usage and not total system usage
-reply: but it doesn't tell people about my ramage...
-rebuttal: your ramage needs maybe the result of you just having more stuff running in the background. You may need more ram but it's because you are running more stuff and BF3.
-next reply: But 32bit OS doesn't fully use 4gigs of ram
-reply: That has nothing to do with the current conversation

So replying to the conversation that a 32bit os doesn't fully use 4gigs of ram doesn't prevent people from playing BF3 nor does it contribute that people should be reporting BF3 memory usage vs total system usage.

Lets not forget the title of this thread "how much ram does BF3 use"

I posted this in another thread but, your going to need atleast 6gb....The way they made the game it uses just a little over 4gb of ram. (4.5-4.8) Try this, open task manager, hit the performance tab, and play the game, you will notice stuttering and massive frame drops, ctrl-alt-dlt and look at your performance tab and it will show your ram being maxed out. No joke. You might be able to get away with 4gb, if you turn everything of on your computer and just have the game running. And I mean literally turn the game into windows classic look. Turn off everything that is running while you are gaming, and then maybe 4gb will be enough.

You don't need 6gigs of ram to play BF3, LOL. All you need is 4 gigs of ram as long as you don't have a lot of other stuff running in the background. The game will run just fine using it's auto IQ detection settings. But that also depends on CPU, GPU etc. thumb.gif

As already posted that is what you see when you alt tab out to look at ram usage. Which is what I see as well. Although you do have to take into consideration the other 2 things you need:o web bowser, etc they will still manage to fit with just 4gigs just fine (even less then 4 gigs).

Now if the OP needs other applications running in the background that takes up some memory then sure just go to 8 gigs. But if your only concern is BF3 and you don't have other apps running in the background 4 will do just fine.

I get around 4.25GB of usage.

Settings: All medium, except detail is high @ 1440x900 75Hz with sig rig. I get around 35 - 50 FPS depending on the players and what not.

Yeah. thats what I said. reread my post. I said if you just run BF3 with nothing else running at all, You might be able to make it. But in reality why would you want that??? 6-8gb ram kits are dirt cheap right now, and why would you want to limit your self? Just get 8gb, be happy and dont worry about being limited.
And I can post a picture once I get home, sorry at work currently.

Like it was said earlier, a 32 bit process cannot use more than 4GB of memory so I don't know how you people are getting memory usage of over 4GB unless you are telling us how much your entire system is using, which is not what OP wants.

OP wants what BF3 ALONE is using, and ONLY BF3. Not the total memory usage by the whole system and all applications.

That said, I don't have BF3, but I just wanted to help clear it up. redface.gif

Exactly, you got it right.

What I mean is that BF3 (given that it is a 32 bit application) cannot consume 4gb of ram. The game, not the OS. In fact, as there will be some memory shared among other processes (like the C runtime or Direct3D code), it will typically be less than that.

The resource monitor (memory tab) is a nice way of displaying that information. I can post a sample C program for you that will allocate memory until there's none available for the process, and you'll see that it will be <4GB.

Your post contradicts itself which is why I made things clear. BF3 doesn't require any out of ordinary amount of ram in order to play. If the OP doesn't have a lot of other programs running he can manage BF3, web browser, etc without needing more then 4 gigs wink.gif. Although some believe that BF3 has a memory leak the game should be patched and hopefully the bugs are fixed. But the issue isn't about ram it's addressing how much memory BF3 is actually using (which was already provided in a previous pic). Be that as it may, you didn't fully read my post when I made it clear that if the OP uses a lot of ram already he should just get more (8gigs for example). Because his OS needs it, not because BF3 needs it specifically.

Please understand carefully, BF3 works fine with a 32 bit OS (vista/win7) there is nothing prohibitive about a 32 bit win7/vista that will prevent you from playing BF3. So, the mention of it during this conversation about the difference in BF3 memory usage and total system memory usage make it moot.
