Its not a total fail given the pricing.

Just remember to mention that in some workloads they perform like 4/6/8 core chips and is others they are like 2/3/4 core chips.

I still believe labeling them as 2/3/4 core chips with "Core Multi-Threading, better than Intel's Hyper-Threading", we would have seen a much different reception at the review sites. 4100 does a decent job for a 2c / 4t chip. The same applies to the 6100 and 8120 / 8150 being 3c / 6t and 4c / 8t respectively.

I Know AMD wanted the lead going to 8 cores, and describing it as 8 cores to server people makes some sense... But to the desktop crowd it kinda falls short due to the performance inconsistencies.

8 cores that means we can run 8 word prsecesser at one time to bad intel can't do that

Let me ask you something. And Unity100, and the rest of you defending it, and anyone else that's pro-Bulldozer, feel free to chime in -

If someone came to you and said, "I have $300 or less to spend on a CPU. Which one should I get?"

If your answer is Bulldozer, your head is not on straight.

I wouldn't recommend BD to anyone. I bought one because I wanted one. You see, I have my own will. tongue.gif My 965BE started to get tired, so I needed a new CPU. Was going to get 8150 but they are STILL not available here. So 8120 it was. And I have absolutely nothing to complain about with it yet.

Now, is that good enough for ya?

If they are looking for something at stock clocks (they dont know how to oc etc)

1090T hands down.

If they want to oc and know how and are getting a cooler to match.

FX-8120 if you can score one @ 200 or less
Maybe a FX-4100 or Phenom II x4 955. Depending on their usage habits/availability/local prices and a better video card or motherboard.

Truthfully, FX series needs to drop another $10 across the board before Id recommend them over a Phenom to anyone other than people that transcode dvd's all day

I'd feel terrible if you do this though. clearly the intel counterpart is better.

from what I've read it needs a FX4100 to be at 4.8ghz to match a phenom II x4 @4ghz. having higher power consumption as well makes it even worse.

getting BD is a bad idea atm. it really hurts to say this because I'm a huge amd fan and built almost every build amd for the past few years

If you want to build something out of spite, do a Thuban build on a good am3+ MB. Then you can wait for price drops or PD if its any better.

Which brings me to something else, if PD is 10% better power/thermal efficiency and that translates into 10% higher clocks and some bugfixes... Wouldn't that make the high end sku for PD 4-4.2Ghz?

Meh, Ive hit 4.8 on a 4 phase board with minimal extra VRM cooling. I doubt its using as much as the FX-8120's or 8150's at that speed. And that's with a chip that needs 1.55v to hit 4.8

What I really want to see, is a native FX-4 series. Not die harvested parts. Im sure that those would be absolute monsters in terms of overclocking.

Maybe if it was a native FX-4000 series with 1 integer core, 1 FPU per module. Seeing how that pretty much gives a 10+ % IPC increase.. (from benches of 8150's with every other core disabled).
