That would be a fx-8 series though, you can do that now.

I seriously doubt that will happen. But a fx-4 series that is smaller and probably 4mb l3 cache, would probably hit 5 Ghz reliably with 2800+ cpu-nb clocks. That would be a good step forward for AMD's new low end. Taking the second int core out would help nothing, as it is only 12-15% of the die space of a module. Its only 5-7% of the current die size as far as I understand.

Really, I cant fault the FX-4 series much. Its effectively a dual core + CMT chip that is at least keeping pace with AMD's old quads. Better yet, the FX-8 series is 4 core + CMT and keeps pace with Phenom X6's

Marketing is what killed this line of chips to many people in the tech community, "Oh, look, AMD released another chip that cant keep up with an Intel chip with less cores."
It should have been, "Oh wow, AMD released a chip that competes with Intel on a per core basis with its new HT alternative." They could have called it Virtual Core Technology (VCT) or something similar.

The friggin title to this thread is nothing but a veiled insult to people who don't buy into the BD Koolaid and you wonder why there is such a response? I know you guys want to sit around in your cave (otherwise known as the AMD section) and congratulate yourselves on how only you are smart enough to see how amazing BD is while the entire rest of the computing world is wrong, but when you make thread titles like "BD is really better than SB" and "Why you so hurt about BD?" they show up on the main page where people go, "Hmmm, lemme check this out". Next thing you know you are surrounded by deluded fanboys making comments like "the 8120 is the fastest cpu for $200" or "BD is really faster than SB because such and such GPU-bottlenecked benchmark says so". Then, somehow, after responding with logic and truth you are angrily derided and reported to mods as a troll and told that you have no business even posting in the AMD section (where I suppose misinformation is not only tolerated but encouraged).

Here's the facts:

1. BD is a decent CPU but a failure in the marketplace because it is no upgrade from the prior generation.
2. SB beats BD in just about every single category including performance, power consumption, value, etc.
3. Intel is NOT evil and does not need to be "vanquished" by nerd-ragers on a quest from God.
4. Making ridiculous, unfounded, and blatantly false statements about BD/SB then being "annoyed' that someone shows up to prove you wrong is just childish and stupid.

Thanks.

Nope, Intel isn't evil at all.

What is very clear though, is that with 3-way SLI, performance was continually better, and noticeable to a large degree, with the Intel 2500K CPU. It seemed to us that the AMD FX-8150 CPU was holding back the performance of 3-way SLI. We've certainly seen this scenario before. When we upgraded from an Intel i7 920 to the i7 2600K, we saw performance increase by as much as 40% with the new CPU with 3-way SLI. It is therefore no surprise that we are seeing performance vary so much and yield better results with the Intel 2500K.

The 2500K only has 4 threads/cores, while the FX-8150 has 8, yet it is certainly not core count holding back performance in games. There was a 200MHz difference between the CPUs, but that just can't account for the level of difference we are seeing here. There are core (forgive the pun) differences between Bulldozer and Sandy Bridge that are just too far and wide apart, and it is clear Sandy Bridge is the better performer.

The Bottom Line

In every game we played so far between the AMD FX-8150 and Intel 2500K, not once did the AMD FX-8150 come out on top with a dual or triple-GPU configuration. Even when performance was "similar," the Intel CPU still held a certain percentage of performance advantage, over the AMD CPU. Given these results, we saw no need to include the i7 2600K. When we look at pricing, things all start to fall in place. Currently, the Intel i5 2500K can be had for $214.99 online. The AMD FX-8150 is currently more expensive at $279.99 online. That extra $65 will get you twice the cores, but it won't make up for Bulldozers low gameplay performance. Save your money, get an Intel i5 and overclock it for a better experience.

All of our gameplay testing has brought us to this single conclusion, if you are serious about gaming on the PC, and or you have a dual-GPU or better configuration, you will simply have a better gameplay experience with an Intel i5 or i7 CPU. Currently, when it comes to Bulldozer and Sandy Bridge, Intel simply has the better platform for high-end gaming.

Yes, but how do you counter the old standby that Intel is an evil cooperation who uses childern and puppy souls to make cpus?

Because we know that's where it's going to go, once it's been proven with far more proof than should actually be required that Bulldozer uses more power, costs more, gives less performance, and overall is the worst choice available currently.

Haha, I'm afraid that's not true. Intel is a greedy megacorp and one of the worst offenders when it comes to their track record of unethical business practices.

Just do a Google search for horror stories from former employees describing their corporate culture in lurid detail.

I dont deny that the whole FX series was a blunder, but AMD could have at least mitigated some of the insult -> injury by not overhyping and over stating the capabilities of their chips for what seemed like years.

Is it an improvement over their old processors, (if you look at modules as cores and cores as threads) yes

Can it match Intel, (with optimized code in highly threaded situations) sometimes

Can it be competitive in the marketplace, We will have to see how they adjust prices.

Note:
FX-4100 is already a better buy than most any newer I3 system for a tweaker, and its cheaper than a I3-2100.
1155 and am3+ are both relatively upgradeable depending on how much cash you sink into the board.

What gets me, is that knowing the problematic performance in gaming... They hyped it even harder.
