If it's for workstation uses/encoding/rendering/etc, in ADDITION to gaming, then it's absolutely worth it.
Other than that, the only other categories I can think of are: a) money isn't an issue and regardless of use or any sort of reason, someone has to have the best or b) someone just has a hard-on for tech and constantly upgrades just to play with/try something new, with the expectation that no gains are really going to be derived from the investment.
This is OCN, so all of the above are expected. Personally, I would use a 3930K for work AND play, but I still can't justify it since i've got multiple PCs for work and, for gaming, my current sig rig has managed to destroy everything i've thrown at it so far, including BF3 amd Skyrim...and I don't see any game coming out in the near future that I would expect to really push the envelope past BF3's graphical quality to be quite honest....

Oh I'm not disagreeing I'm just saying, people are angry because it was marketed as something it's clearly, not.

In fact, in Xbit's review of the core, the only game it even competes in is Metro and wins by 0.8 of a frame.

As an encoding platform, we've had a sample since it was released and it blows the crap out of my OC'd 980x...I'll preach that all day, up and down the strip...This chip, is amazing for it's price and will render faster than the X58's.

When it comes to everything else, even folding...The core is a dud...It's not an improvement over the 2600/2700k's and isn't even a performance increase in benches.

It's like putting a Ferrari engine in a VW chassis...Sure, you can say you have a Ferrari engine but, are you ever going to use it? No, not really.

Well we should make a special thread "How can these idiots people waste so much money + X79 worth nothing" and put all the OCN whiners in it. Because all these post begin to be really annoying.

Your reading comprehension is severely lacking. No one here is whining. No one here called anyone an idiot. It seems like you're the only one with issues here, to be honest...not even sure why you've take a defensive stance. It's not like anyone attacked you. rolleyes.gif

Don't worry, be happy. Honestly. It's your money, you can do what ever you want with it. But I understand why you are saying that. I know it can be annoying, but don't try to convince those that don't agree with you to agree with you. They never will. And don,t seek their approval. You will never get it. wink.gif

Just like you, and like ALOT of other people, I'm anxiously awaiting my 3930k and Rampage IV, and couldn't care less about what other people think about what I'm buying. I don't need anyone's approval. I buy things for me, not for them. biggrin.gif

Never let other people decide for you. Make your own decisions, then be happy with them. Have fun with your new system. smile.gif

No one tried to get him to agree with them on anything. Not really sure what the point of this post is. If you think people actually care what you're buying, that's your problem. Except that no one cares....there was an intelligent debate over buying a 3930K for strictly gaming, which shows ZERO improvement over a 2600K, and that's about it. You guys are full of yourselves if you think that anyone was actually ragging on you for buying SB-E.

I am about to pull the trigger as well, but this will be a work AND play build. I really couldn't care less if people want to shell out $1K+ for a purely gaming, SB-E based rig. No, seriously. No one cares what you're buying - try not to make it sound like it's a bigger deal than it is, cause it's quite comical - the only ones complaining about being called out never got called out in this thread in the first place... rolleyes.gif

It's a work platform, pure and simple...6 cores aren't even supported by retail software yet...Can't even bench it properly on all 6.
If you encode/work...This core is perfect...If you don't...The 2600k//2700k is literally better in most aspects.

I agree it's marketing is a bit messed up, like for example the Asus Rampage Extreme IV X79 seen below is boxed with BF3 and is advertised all over it as essentially a gamers platform. That in my eyes is absolutely wrong...

600

Those uninformed will see such advertising with BF3 and will shell out for it thinking 6cores/12threads are what BF3 needs to rock, which is so far from the truth it's not even funny.

I think one of the main issues is intel splitting the platforms and staggering their release in face of most software not using 6 cores.

I cant convince myself to buy Sandy E now, when I know I can get better 4 core performance (6 core benching only use for me) just a few months from now and would have to change platforms to do so, and can do so at a reduced cost.

I think Intel is alienating some that would not mind cost for 2 extra cores/enthusiast platform....but cost + it not being on new tech at least at same time is a non-starter for me.

But I am looking forward to benches from those that buy them. I remember the good old days, where I could bench a new cpu every few months without having to change mobos at same frequency, which is fairly disruptive on daily use computer.

I think that you have some difficulties too, i never said i was personally attacked here, i talked about many threads on the subject across OCN.
Maybe you felt yourself attacked who know.

Don't worry i don't need to debate about this, we're here to share passions (originally), and better i'm (really) agree about what you say, happy ? wink.gif

I don't try to convince anyone on this forum, i'm not paid by Intel lol, for me it's just a mass upgrade from my current x6. Thank you and have fun you too, burn these cores ! biggrin.gif

I would never had wasted my money on such a completely ludicrous product. I can return everything I've ordered except the cpu. NewEgg refuses to accept factory sealed cpu's for refund or exchange for any reason, so I guess it's off to eBay with it.
I won't bother lying and saying I don't mind the bother of returning these items and the loss of money it'll be. It's still better than losing it all because of an error in prejudgement. Live and learn isn't a free concept.
Thanks for nothing, Intel. I pray you get IvyBridge right.
BTW; I found that you have to copy and paste a link directly into your post for it to even appear. If you use the dropdown, "Links", it'll screw your link up every single time.

What exactly is the reasoning behind returning everything? I'm confused...

We've had pretty good knowledge even upto the bit-tech review of what to expect from the platform. I'm confused how you could spend this much money to then say "I sure wish I had read this bit-tech review before I bought into this platform"

I expected more from the E series, but, I've completely changed my mind again. I'm keeping almost everything I ordered. I took the bit-tech review all out of proportion. What the hell do they know anyway? They haven't given it anything but synthetic tests and no real-world testing. I did cancel the motherboard and ordered an ASUS P9X79-Deluxe. The Rampage IV/BF3 I had ordered just has too many things I'll never use, just like the Maximus IV P67 that I'm using now.
I really haven't been thinking quite straight for the past week and I just got a little paranoid after the Bit-Tech review. My new air conditioner crapped out last week and it's hot as hell in here. The repairman came yesterday and said it'll be at least another week before the parts will arrive. Both the fan motor and compressor just went bad all at once since I bought it this July. If you ever need an A/C do yourself a favor and get a Whirlpool. The last Sears Kenmore I had ran for 7 years 24x365 without a hitch. Now, Samsung or LG has bought out the Kenmore line and all the parts are now Chinese &/or Korean. Something else I should've researched a little better.
So far here's what is on the way for this build:
Intel i7-3950 (out for delivery)
Geil EVO Corsa 4x4GB 1866 1.5V. (arrives tomorrow)
ASUS P9X79-Deluxe (supposedly arrives by Friday)
Corsair H100 like the one I'm using now (again, supposedly by Friday. Twice, Amazon said they had some items I ordered in stock, when they actually didn't.)
I already have a new Silverstone Strider 850, a spare Corsair 800DW, an HP 1260i DVD/RW, my MSI GTX580 Lightning XE, 2 WD RE3-1TB hdd's and a Crucial M4 256GB ssd.
If the cpu is as good as I'm hoping this should be one kick ass computer. We'll see.
