Lubricating XFX 5770

So my card's fan has jammed to the point where it won't even start. I have to put it to 100% & manually rotate to start it. And even when it's running, it would randomly slow down/speed back up. Sometime it'd stop running altogether.

This is the one I have, there's nothing on the back for the oil/grease to enter.

I searched a bit & found this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH8spGRL3Yk

Tried this, although not hard enough so that I don't break anything.

So, How do I lubricate this thing?

P.S. : Aftermarket cooler isn't an option.

Cant you RMA it? XFX have a double lifetime warranty.

If you want to go the fix yourself route, just add a very small amount of 3-in-1 oil to the bearing, you can also try graphite shavings. Both can be conductive so be careful!

If that fails to work remove the stock fan (you already have it unscrewed), you may need to take the cooler off to get the wire out. Then just duck-tape/zip tie a 80mm fan on top and connect it to a mobo header, it would be ghetto but it'll work tongue.gif

I've unscrewed the Fan & have removed the sticker from the back of it. Wouldn't that void the warranty?

The problem is, the bearing's not exposed like in other fans I've seen.

I might actually try that if the above things don't work. thumb.gif

Your picture isn't terribly clear but the little red disc in the middle should pop out if you carefully prise it up with a penknife. As for voiding warranty I doubt they would notice if you stuck the sticker back on, provided you haven't rounded over the screws theres no way for them to tell it has been off.

this is why i got the one with the blower style cooler, besides it being reference, you can completely self maintain the fan and all easily

It was the first thing that came to my mind, but it seems to be attached with the rest of the body. Also, I got impatient with that & scratched that disk to the point it won't go unnoticed. Also, I lost the sticker. I guess that takes the warranty out of the picture. redface.gif

I tried taking the top body of the fan & the base apart by force(as in this video) but it wouldn't come off so I didn't continue. Would it come apart without breaking the thing?

At this point what have you got to lose tongue.gif
You could screw it back on and chance an RMA, but you risk having to pay return postage. Up to you, they would be entirely within their rights to claim you did the damage (even though we know differently) if they happen to notice it. Or you could come clean to XFX and maybe see if you can get them to post out a new fan assembly, from what I have heard of XFX support this doesn't seem too likely.
