GTX580 - Page 2

I have been looking into getting a new GPU since playing BF3 as my GTX470 isn't performing to my needs. Whilst it runs okay, I would like it to run a little faster and smoother. I have been looking at the GTX580 for around £400 but was wondering if the new series of Nvidia's cards were coming out any time soon and in turn dropping the prices for the current series of cards.
So what would you say about this upgrade? A reasonable jump in performance for the cash? ( I would also be selling the 470 after buying the 580 to regenerate some funds).

Well I was about to give you advice on your question but a more important question became evident no one else caught or I'm missing....please enlighten.

How are you running three Samsung 24" monitors on one GTX 470? Nvidia cards can only run two monitors on one card. Hmmmmm?

Sorry, it's not in my spec but I also have a little 7300LE in there to power one of my monitors with the other two plugged into the 470.

Adding another 470 for SLI would cause some issues that were covered in a previous post of mine.

If you have the itch to upgrade right now, the 580 will not disappoint. You can buy another one next year when the price drops, and have a very fast gpu system. I would however go with the 3gb. If your not going to get a 3gb 580, wait because bf3 regularly eats up every last mb of vram I have, and this will only get worst as future games push the envelope of cutting edge graphics, not to mention hardocp has shown that having more than 1.5gb of vram is a nice improvement.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. Hard to say exactly when the new cards are going to be out. Next two to three months. If you can wait the pricing may go down some for current cards.

Kepler is more about going green with efficiency requiring less watts per performance. As for raw performance one expect anywhere from 15%-25% as all previous gen cards have shown. The big deal is next gen cards will require 50% less watts to run than current gen.

Is the 580 worth it currently is "yes", whether you can hold out is up to you. A GTX 680 (or equivilant) will yeild more performance by 15-25%.

I'm currently running BF3 Ultra setting 4xMSAA on - currently getting 60-70 FPS. Crysis 2 maxes settings 70-80 FPS. Single 120Hz 1920x1200 resolution.

Is the 580 more perfomance over a 470, yes. It's the most powerful single card solution out. thumb.gif

Thanks for the info. +rep

I think I will be able to hold out until the new cards come out. I still have a few things to save for before I can splash out £400 on a new GPU. However, it's looking like the 580 3Gb will be a great card to move to after my 470!
