Need more Ram

Thread Starter
I currently am running an i7 with 6 gigs (2 gigs sticks) of 7-7-7-20 corsair dominator ram. I am running at looser timings. 9-9-9-24. If I want to add more ram should I get ram with the same timings? I know this question probably get asked a lot.

Also is removing the heat-spreaders bad? I may need to remove spreaders to fit under noctua heat sink.

running at 1400 MHZ 1.64 volts.

yes getting more of the same ram is best. Removing the spreaders is not bad actually is most cases they are just for show and removing them makes the ram cooler. Just be careful when removing them. the dominator spreaders might be hard to remove.

Should I get the same timings? Or it doesn't really matter.

You shouldn't even need 1.5v to run that memory at DDR-1400, 9-9-9-24, let alone 1.64v.

What heatspreader is on them specifically? Some Dominators have detachable fins on their heatspreaders that can safely be removed, but I would not attempt to remove the heatspreaders themselves. Most Dominators have the heatspreader epoxied on, and even the ones that use thermal tape have strong adhesive. Unless you know exactly what you are doing, you stand a good chance of destroying the DIMMs if you attempt to remove the IHS.

Regarding heatsink clearance, if this is D-14 you are going to be using, it's easy to raise the front fan, move it to the rear, or just leave it off entirely. The D-14 cools reasonably well with just the 140mm middle fan.

Anyway, at this point you may be better off getting some 4GiB DIMMs. Much more versatility than 2GiB ones, not too much more expensive anymore, and it's perfectly possible to run your current set along with three more 4GiB DIMMs (giving you 18GiB total), if you want.

I disagree.

Most non-low votlage DDR3 1600+ will get quite warm under heavy loads and many current heatspreaders do serve a useful purpose.

I don't buy memory for the heatspreaders, but I rarely attempt to remove them anymore, as they are attached better, which both makes them useful and dramatically increases the risk of damage when trying to remove them.

Noctua NH-U12P SE2 120mm SSO CPU Cooler. I was thinking of removing one of the fins on the dominators.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608014

Any thoughts on getting them with different ram timings? Should I sell the ones I have and go for vengeance?

Thank you guys so much for all the help.
