With the rumored 20% increase in core performance over the current sandy bridge cores, I think its easy to say Ivy Bridge will be a huge hit. Also with price tags most likely lower then Sandy Bridge chips. I know for a fact im waiting to see how they are. Shouldn't be long GEN3 boards have already flooded the market. thumb.gif

You'll still need ln2 for 5.5ghz+ with ib. There is no "ease"

what does your personal grief over the subject have to do with anything? im just stating the obvious to all the posts going "oh should do 5ghz with good cooling, yeah bro"

For one intel has no reason whatsoever to lower the prices of IB relative to their SB counterparts, didnt you see the launch of 2700k just a little while ago? Instead of replacing a price slot they just put a higher price tag on it. Obviously IB will offer more for the money, but don't expect them to compete with themselves, lol.

As for the 20% increase - its a die shrink, for the past 8 years not a single intel die shrink has increased IPC. There will be higher clocks but mostly intel will just be cutting back on the TDP

Ivy Bridge is a little more than a typical die shrink, as they've also changed to 3d transistors and implemented a decent amount of new features that aren't typical with a die shrink.

For example, based on the ivy bridge preview article at Anandtech:
There are IPC improvements on the cpu, memory controller, and caches.

"On the CPU core side that means you can expect clock-for-clock performance improvements in the 4 - 6% range."

and this:

"The FP/integer divider sees another performance gain this round. Ivy Bridge's divider has twice the throughput of the unit in Sandy Bridge. The advantage here shows up mostly in FP workloads as they tend to be more computationally heavy."

So we should see a decent performance gain over a typical die shrink.

Just like ht or new branch predictor in nehalem or super shuffle or slce in wolfdale.. ironically this is the very definition of their typical die shrink, its called marketing.

Well, you said there haven't been IPC improvements in 8 years (which I doubt), so if Ivy Bridge has IPC improvements, I guess it fails your definition of a typical die shrink.

Only a die shrink would mean you keep everything exactly the same--except make it smaller, which this clearly isn't.

4.55 @ 1.356 volts. Will push it harder at a later time. Really have no reason to go any higher currently.

Haven't done much prime yet but a few hours of gaming temps are below 55c with my h100 on med.

Thanks for this info, 55c isn't bad, i'll also try to push it to 4.5/4.7

Lol at 4.5 it's already beyond the 990x since a while biggrin.gif
