Computer won't start up! Blue screen and distortion... help please

First of all I'm sorry if this is the incorrect section for me to post this in - I didn't know where else to create this thread. For this thread please ignore the specs below my post - they are for my new computer. The computer in question is my old one which I'm attempting to recover my files from, but am having issues.

Right, so my old computer in an intel xeon dual core 3ghz or so and has a hd 4650 graphics card. My HDD is IDE (so I cannot simply place the hdd in my new pc to xfer files) since it's fairly old. It has been working fine for a long time, except for now. The problem occurred recently and i think the last thing I done to the computer was remove the little speaker which was inside the pc and connected to the motherboard.

Here's my issue - I turn the PC on, it loads the screen fine, and as it goes onto the loading screen with the Windows logo (I have Windows 7 Ultimate x32) but there's a problem: the icon is completely distorted and has a mixture of colours. It then goes onto a blue screen which closes down within 3 seconds and restarts my PC. Weird, eh? It then goes onto a strange screen after restarting and starts beeping (6 times, maybe?) and does this twice. It then goes onto another screen and gives me the option to launch start up repair. I press enter and it goes onto Startup Repair. But there's another problem... I can't work out what the hell is going on because there are random colours all over the place and I can't see anything properly. I can just make out the little window. I see purple and blue colours..

Sorry for being vague, I'm extremely tired and I was just wondering what's wrong with my pc and really need to get my files off of this computer by tomorrow for my IT assignment. If somebody could help me, I'd be grateful. Many thanks. Feel free to ask any questions.

Sounds like your video card is artifacting and/or dying. Try booting in to safe mode. If not then does the mobo have integrated graphics that you can try or do you have another video card?

Wouldn't seem to even let me get to the safe mode option screen, it just starts up by itself. Although I managed to get a quick glimpse at the bsod and saw this: atikmdag.sys

Any ideas? And nope, no integrated graphics and don't have another video card frown.gif (Damn AGP)

Hmmmm. It sounds like the video card, or drivers for the video card. Are you sure the card isnt overheating?

Agreed, but I've no idea what to do about it. I can't imagine it's overheating - the fan is connected correctly, the blades are spinning and I can't imagine it would overheat instantly after turning it on. Thanks for the help though.

Im pretty much out of ideas. If you cant get in to safe mode then theres not much you can do. You can try to run a live CD of ubuntu or something like that. Or you can get a IDE to usb adapter and get the files off that way.

Okay thanks for the help anyway. 'fraid I don't have any CD's and I may have to look into an IDE to usb adapter, thanks for the suggestion. I need it for tomorrow, but eh, there's not much I can do I suppose. I'll keep refreshing this thread for other answers though smile.gif
