2nd switch causing issues please help.

My network set up.jpg 110k .jpg file Hi guys so here is my dilemma: Last night I was going to watch an HD video with dts master audio and the video stuttered or audio dropped off. After many trials an errors I have pinpointed the culprit. Turns out my second gig switch is causing my lag or video to stutter. Attached is a pic of what components are attached to the network and how.

The weirdest thing is that if I unplug the d link switch and plug in the cable coming from the netgear switch directly into my htpc the stutter and lag are gone.

So what is the D link doing to cause my lag or stutter?

I already did the Microsoft throttling fix and clean install of windows on htpc.

All wiring is cat 5e.

So any ideas on what is causing this?

Is my D-Switch failing?

Or do I have to go into the switch and mess with the settings? If any

As of right now my set up is still the same except that the cable is going from the netgear switch directly to my htpc. Though I really need the 2nd switch in the loop to give Internet to my ps3, blu ray player and LED TV.

Oh one more thing if the switch is the problem then what other switch do you guys recommend? Is there such a thing as a smart switch?

This is the dlink in question http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=DGS-1005G

Alright. Just your picture didn't show that.

Either way, sounds like you solved the issue. It's the switch. It's unmanaged, meaning there's no settings to change. I'd either RMA it or return it if possible. If not, find a decent replacement. Avoid those green switches. It's just an excuse to make a slower product.

^^ Switch could be going bad.
Have you tried swapping the switches? Just to see if that resolves anything?
As for switch replacement, I've had good luck with Netgear switches. I have a old 10/100 5 port thats been plugged in and running under a couch in a separate room for over a year now with no hiccups.

Youve got 320 ft with the Cat6, so youre good there. Why not the straight hookup from switch to HTPC and eliminate the 2nd switch? (Nvrmind, thats the way ur connected now)

1. Id get rid of both switches and buy 1 that can segregate traffic. Put devices on their own vlan.
2. The issue is most likely broadcast storms. Its also a reason not to daisy chain switches and why networks have 'backbones'. Not saying you can't as its done alot but these are issues that creep up.
3. 'Smart' switch is exactly what I'm talking about. Create a VLAN for the traffic you want to keep seperate then apply QOS to assign priority...
