System halts with GPU power

Thread Starter
Hello fellow Technocrats,

I've been having this problem lately, and I wanted a second opinion from other technicians out there.
Here is the scenario:
GPU is an HD 4770.

Put in rig, 6 pin power connector connected = system halt
(PSU quits, and behaves exactly as it would if there was an electrical short (ie, must power off PSU for a while, to get it to power on again).

Put in rig, GPU power connector NOT attached = system powers on, no display, but system boots (shown by HDD activity).

My diagnosis, is the GPU - as I have a 7200GS which works in the said PCI-E slot.

The only thing which makes me think twice, is that EVERY "dead" gpu that I have about the house, EVEN the ones which never caused the system to short (upon being connected via GPU power), now behaves in EXACTLY the same way..

ie - shuts down power immediately, and the PSU behaves as though it was shorted.

Can anyone think of anything it could be, BESIDES this 4770? (which I admit, I am desperate to have work).

Plugged into an independent GPU (one, which has nothing but the card connected), the same behavior is exhibited.
I'm grasping at straw here...

My problem is quite similar to the one described here:

It's the PCIe 6-pin power connector, because as soon as it's connected to the card the PSU is going into protection mode. Try to reverse the cable end to the card to PSU and from PSU to the card.

Or are you using 4-pin molex to 6-pin PCIe or other type of power cable adapter?

I'm going to try to figure it out though, lest u have no other means of explaining it.
----edit---
I'm using 6 Pin (one of the wires/pin is absent - by manufacture, that always worked before tho).

Some modular PSUs come with PCIe power cables which look identical at both ends. But if you mistakenly inserted the end to the card or PSU, it will trip the PSU into protection mode.

I can't find any information on your PSU, so this is what I could think of most likely your case.

ahh, I see. Sigh.
Well, I thank you for the response Ken, but I'm afraid I dont use a modular PSU.
I have those traditional D shaped molexes.
My gpu power connector converts one of those, into the 6 pin connection needed for the GPU.

Man, talk about dashed hopes lol.
Still, I thank you for your thoughts - it was a good idea really. Good thinking.

Well, it doesn't matter if it's not a modular PSU but the same applies. Check the adapter wiring or try different adapter. That's the only explanation that could trip the PSU other than there's an electrical short in the card.

Take a look at the top pic provided by Ken1649. You need two D-shaped molex connectors to convert to one 6-pin PCIE connector for the card.

And, your PSU has no native 6-pin PCIE power connector? Not even one?
