GTX 280 Power Question

Thread Starter
Alright, So I got a GTX 280 the other day from amother member and I realized that my wimpy 450 Watt PSU cannot power it. So here is my.question, can I use a extra, 300 watt PSU to power it for the time being until I her the cash to buy myself a new one? If so how should I wire it up? I have a wide array of molex to random other connectors that I could tear apart an solder up to make it all work. Thanks for the input and I will give Rep if you can help me out.

http://www.overclock.net/t/15751/info-can-i-use-two-power-supplies-with-one-computer

They have a guide on this site.

Edit probably should have been more specific, yes you can. The idea is to use one power supply for your cpu/motherboard and hard drive. While using the other specifically for the gpu. In which case you would power on the second power supply first then hit the power button on the case (attached to the motherboard).

I dont know the specifications of your psu but if it's a "quality" 450w it probably would be fine for now. From what i looked up full load with a standard setup for including the gtx 280 was around 363 watts.

Sweet! That really helps. Now on to wireing it up to power the graphics card. I only have 6 PCI-E connectors, but I read somewhere else that I could just plug them both in and jump the last two pins on the 8 pin connector. Is this safe to do?

I have a BFG 450 Watt PSU, but it still only has one 6 pin PCI-E connector which brings me back to the bridge the last two pin idea.

To power on the other psu you need to jump the green wire to a black one on the 24 pin. That is what I had to do to run my 280. I ran both psu's to the gpu.

gtx 280's power consumption is somewhere between gtx 480 and gtx 470. yeah they're that power hungry frown.gif

You mean you need a 8 and a 6 pin for the card? Like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86ss7I3nhoc

States that the last two pins are just ground (in which case you can ground it to itself).

You are going to be using two 6 pins in the card right? If you only have one do not split the 6 pin cable just get the molex to 6 pin (or 8 and avoid the issue altogether)
something like this would work note that you would not want to use both plug on the adapter at once)

I have 2 molex to 6 pin adapters on hand. I will experiment with it and see if my PSU alone will power it and if not I will hook up my extra and use that. Will report back later with results.

Your power supply has 2 12v rails make sure you try and get it on both of them or you can put the card on one and your motherboard on the other
