Buy 3930X now or wait for Ivy Bridge?

The title says it all.

What I mean by "wait for Ivy bridge" is lga 1155 and not IB-E

Any comments?

IIRC the biggest improvement in Ivy over Sandy is the integrated GPU. If you're not going to be using that, then I'm sure you'll get all the performance you'll ever need out of an SB-E chip thumb.gif

This entirely depends on your budget and what you intend to use the PC for. SB-E and IB are two completely different platforms for different market segments. The prices are very different.

If you plan to do a lot of rendering, video encoding, folding, etc., then you can consider SB-E. However only you can decide if it's really worth the extra cost.

If gaming is your thing, then SB-E offers little over SB and IB. Only consider it if you intend to do use at least three high-end GPUs.

tl;dr: If you need SB-E, you know you need SB-E. But if you have to ask... wink.gif

Well, I do a lot of rendering and multi-threaded applications, so SB-E would be ideal. The problem for me is the price of the CPUs. I don't know if it's worth it to me to spend that much extra money for faster multi-threaded applications.

Wait for Ivy Bridge. The prices will drop a bit when it debuts.

It's really not worth it. The CPU a ton more expensive and you need expensive motherboards + all 4 RAM DIMMs filled.

from the benchmarks that are out, dont strain your wallet, you would be spending a lot more for small gains, but the value is in the eye of the purchaser, from what you have in your system ANY intel chip is a HHHHHUGE improvement, microcenter has the 2500k in the $185 price range. Or 2600k with HT is still half the cost of the 3930k

Im not sure about rendering but that might be the only thing the amd fx-8120 can do right, but even then I would still go intel. I played with the amd 8150 a few days and quickly sold it, it just plain out gets too hot at 5Ghz and still not quick enough to be competative.
