Will changing RAM affect OC on 2500k?

Thread Starter
I started to OC a 2500k in my folding rig but at the moment the only RAM I have to work with is 1 stick of 4GB PNY 1333MHz. I have 2x2GB 1600MHz kit ordered but it will be a few days before it arrives. I was wondering if I could go ahead and work out my OC with just the 1 4GB stick. Will switching it out for the 2x2GB sticks affect my OC in any way? Or am I better off just waiting and OC'ing when I get the 2x2 kit?

Go ahead and start working on your OC now. RAM is not linked to CPU OC in Sandy Bridge. What ever OC you achieve with the 1x4GB stick will be the same as what you'll get with the 2x2GB kit.

That's what I was hoping to hear. Thanks and +rep.

Ram does have an effect on overclocking if you are trying to run +5.0Ghz and trying to use ram at 1866Mhz and more.

The scenario that you stated, no! thumb.gif

I will be at least trying to hit 5GHz+ and overclocking the RAM to 2133MHz. I don't mind a little tweaking after installing the new RAM but I just didn't want to think I had a decent chip/OC only to switch the RAM and find out I can no longer get it stable.

You'll be fine mate, the most you'll have to do is bump up the VCCIO to support your 2133MHz OC on the RAM.

I can run my 2500k @ 5.2GHz with 4x2GB dimms OCed to 2133, don't even have to up the VCCIO. Obviously I can't say that your scenario will be exactly the same, but based on the fact that you'll only have 2x2GB dimms populated (as oppose to 4, which tends to put more strain on the IMC), I think your chances are very good (provided you get a chip that hits 5GHz tongue.gif)

Thanks again for the reassurance. And yeah, if it can hit 5GHz stable. Right now I'm stuck at 4.8 on these 1792 fft's mad.gif but I'll save that for the stable sandy thread if I can't figure it out.
