Anyone know how skyrim runs on a 4870? I got the game the other day but I've been away for a while now and I won't be able to play for a few more days. Is it playable with my sigrig? FYI my 550 has all 4 cores unlocked and running at 3.8ghz

I'm planning to upgrade to 6870 or a 560ti (the new version) if I do decide to upgrade now.

One of the only things stopping me is the 7xxx series cards.

Should I upgrade now? Wait till 7xxx to come out? Or is skyrim going to run okay anyway?

Thanks in advance

It's up to personal preference really. You're certainly not going to be able to run everything on ultra or on very high or possibly even high. I don't have the game so I can't tell you all the settings tongue.gif. But one major factor is that you're running DX10 instead of DX11. Now that really isn't going to hurt you that much unless you insist on running your games at the HIGHEST settings with acceptable frame rates.

Right now I'm certain you'll run the game, that card is still a fair performer in the grand scheme of things(around here I don't really consider the grand scheme of things, because this forum caters to a much more "enthusiast" crowd most would say that card is old and a poor performer, but in reality it's still respectable). Again if you're the type of person that can't settle for less than the very best graphics with 60+ FPS then you'll need a new card.

If I was in your shoes however, keep the 4870. At least install the game and see how it runs, if you're disgusted then upgrade now. If it's playable/enjoyable then wait until the 7XXX series that has so far(either from information/rumor/or speculation) been stated to be significantly more powerful than the current gen 6XXX cards.

What resolution are you playing it at? I played it with an old 8800 Ultra and a Q6600 at 3.1GHz on all high settings at 1680x1050 and it was smooth. The 4870 is more powerful than the 8800 Ultra so you will at least be able to play at those settings.

I don't see why people have pretty good mid-range cards and yet they ask if they need to upgrade. I am playing the game on Ultra with my 5570 overclocked. Plays nice too! Your card is way faster than mine, yes you can play it. Especially at higher fps than me.thumb.gif

I really am tempted to wait for the 7XXX cards. See what the price/performace is like and how they scale in Crossfire (I'm planning on spending alot on my PC next year)

At the moment I'll be playing at 1440x900, but I'm saving up for a 24" 1080p monitor soon

Nah I think you'll be fine. I'm runnin a steady 50-60 fps on the high preset on 1920x1080. Your 4870 should be only slightly less powerful than my 5830.
Edit: Though you do have the 512 and not the 1Gb version which prolly means you'll perform a bit worse.

I'm asking because my card is 2-3 years old now and I'm wondering if now is the right time to upgrade
