Some people say spread it out so that it covers the top of the CPU and is VERY thin and others say put a blop (that's the scientific term thumb.gif ) the size of a grain of rice in the center and let the heasink spread it out. Idk if one or the other is the "best" way.. It will most likely depend on who you ask.

I like spreading it out. It makes me feel more secure knowing that everything is covered.

You've opened the gates to the dark side. There are about 100 ways to do it, personally I always have used a credit card and spread it evenly but thinly on the CPU.

I have used everything from credit cards, matchbook cover, razor blades, knives, plastic flat pieces. There are many ways to spread the thermal paste.
I prefer to spread a small drop thermal paste as thinly and evenly as I can possibly get it. Seems to work best.
I also have a Hyper 212+. But I am upgrading to a Noctuna performance cooler soon.

Yeh i know theres millions of methods and the blob in the center usually works.

However the bass of the 212 isnt really flat due the the heat pipes so i cant see the rice method working

The rice method may be the best for that cooler actually. It will fill the spaces between the heat pipes, or you can apply some paste to the heatsink and fill the gaps with it leaving the pipes paste-less and then do a spread on the CPU. That's actually what I did to my GTX 470's HS where-as the area's between the heat pipes were en-grooved.

I put a tiny bit between the pipes then do very thin lines on the heatpipes themselves.
I use this method on all my Direct touch heatpipe coolers. Works great.

Just don't put too much and any method is fine in the end.

Personally, I just apply a very small blob to the CPU and spread it if it's HDT. People always say that it's bad to do it that way, but I have tried the other methods and haven't really seen any differences in temps.
The most effective TIM application method depends entirely on the surface used.
For HDT coolers filling in the gaps and appling small lines parallel to the heat pipes are the most effective (read this guide).

Hi, I remember reading reviews on thermal paste and came across this.
I think it will help.
Good Luck.
