Hi guys,

I'm looking for answers from 3820 owners here. I'm trying to decide not to buy one for folding, but I'm having a hard time biggrin.gif I already have an x79 setup under water... so it wouldn't be much of a leap to pick one of these up.

In our team competition, 3820's are allowed to fold against 2600k/2700k/3770k/970/980x. There are a few guys running them, but they're failing. Miserably.

From everything I've seen, they *should* be able to compete at a high level... but I can't find good proof. Do any of you guys with good overclocks run linux and fold, or would be able to run a wu or two for some good info?

Thanks smile.gif

if your ran linux server on a 3820 clocked in the 5 GHz range it would compete with the smaller quad cores, but wouldn't offer much of a benifit other than for gaming, X79 is not the platform for budget folding. I would recommend finding a used 2600k or 2700k that clocks really well (5.2-5.3) and just fold on that with a quality motherboard.

(I get 40k ppd with 4 of my 6 cores active at 4.5GHz)

Thanks for the response.

Finding a 2600k that folds at 5.2-5.3 is exceedingly difficult wink.gif And I'm not looking for budget folding.. I've already got a 2600k rig.

Currently I'm running an ES E5 xeon on the x79 board, but I want to 2p those xeons... so I'll be left with a complete x79 setup minus a cpu.

As long as the work units assigned to you are good, you can compete pretty well. The only reason I have such low PPD is because I've had really bad luck with work units. I've folded with my 3820 at 5.3GHz before, but was still well behind the competition due to the work units I was receiving. Some units average around 60-70k PPD on a 5.3GHz 3820, others can be as low as 20k PPD.

Hi, I applied but later found out I can reach that speed with less voltage if that is important.

What other voltages are you running? That voltage seems low for stable.

I havent done any stability test yet but it seems to be doing normal daily functions without crashing. ( i mean basic windows stuff, internet etc). When i first attempted 5250, it was at 1.52 then tried 1.51, 1.50, 1.495..gone all the way down to 1.465 and could boot into windows but after a few minutes it crashed and gradually gone back upto this voltage and it's been working fine so far but like i said havent Primed it yet.
