Crossfired 6970s not working in anything since 11.11 Catalyst update

Thread Starter
I began by trying to install the latest driver like I have a couple of times before, uninstalling current ones, installing new ones... after doing so I fired up a Skyrim (I know it doesn't support crossfire but I had no issues running it at 45-55 fps 1920x1200 ultra, on the single card) but now it was running at about 24-35 fps.

I fired up Crysis to confirm that it was not working which most of the time will keep fraps pegged at 60, until stuff gets really busy. Now This is running 25-30 fps average at 1920x1200 max settings.

I tried uninstalling, running driver cleaner, reinstalling 11.10 (which was the last known driver version that was working well) issue persists. I've been over every setting in the catalyst control center, have tried system restore... I'm at a loss. Both cards are showing up in GPUZ and in the catalyst control center and Crossfire is most definately enabled in the control center.

Anyone ever have similar issues? I've read a couple of other people on other threads have had similar problems but they didn't have any replies about a resolution and no suggested advice. I've got a solid state drive and really don't want to format the thing more than I have to. One person in one of those threads did reformat and his issue persisted. This should be a simple fix.

Any ideas on what to try? I've heard the drivers were a pain in the ass but being semi technical I really didn't think I would have any issues. I always used Nvidia cards up until now... now I'm ready to go back again /sigh. I was just digging my rig until this happened to me.

Please help me.

6970's in crossfire here, but that to me is unheard of.
try swapping the monitor cable from one of the two outputs on the card...

1. uninstall drivers/caps
2. restart
3. swap monitor cable (as mentioned above)
4. reinstall drivers.
5. restart.
6. install caps
7. restart
8. Set all to default in CCC and disable CrossfireX
9. restart
10. Re-enable Crossfire X. This should have u back at normal performance

IF all that fails..... Flip BOTH bios switches on the cards ( while the PC is turned off )
Quite possible corrupted something in the firmware.

Did u use driver sweeper?
Thats been discontinued for obvious reasons..... It does more harm than good.
If the Bios switch flip doesn't work, than your only bet is to reinstall windows.

I had the same issue using driver sweeper, kept gettn "completed with warnings" after driver installs.
Since your saying that, it now only comes down to reinstalling windows.
DO NOT use driver sweeper in the future..... The new Catalyst packages have an improved un-instalation process,
that does alot better than previous versions. So theoretically you won't need to worry about 3rd party programs to uninstall CCC.

I didn't use drive sweeper until after having issues with sub 50% performance after the new driver install. I received that same error message before running drive sweeper. I won't use it anymore. I followed all those steps you suggested and the issue persists. I ran windows system restore once for good measure after doing all of that. The vid card bios switching did not resolve the issue either.

I'm at this point getting concerned that something is wrong with one of my cards. I guess I'll know for sure after a format and clean windows install. I can't be doing all this every time a new driver comes out frown.gif. Thanks for your assistance, let me know if you can think of anything else.
Im almost certain your problem will be resolved after a fresh install of windows if ur suggesting that your cards were in full working order before 11.11 update.
If not than it is safe to say that you have a hardware issue.
You will need to RMA the card that is at fault (hoping its not both).
Post back how you result after windows install.

Also, try fiddling with the cards in the pci-e slots, maybe swap them?
Then try a clear CMOS and powercycle the board.

Post your PC specs.

I'll try those things and then test each card in single-gpu configuration to see if they are both performing the same, that will tell me a lot right there about whether its for sure software related (it has to be if it worked before right *(crosses fingers*).

I had a friend in the Silicon valley build me this, Corey Andersen from Andersen Microtech 408-528-0101 for cheaper than I could even get the parts off of Newegg for when they are on sale! Highly recommended, this is AMD/Powercolors fault, not his.

With the Crucial M4 256GB SSD that I run my game files and OS (Windows 7 64-bit), should load the latest drivers on a jump drive first prior to installing windows. Anything I need to keep in mind for windows 7 performance optimization? Should trim be working on the SSD by default when I load the latest drivers? Do i need to do anything with page file size or anything to make sure that windows takes advantage of all that glorious ram? This is my first SSD and first rig that has over 4 GB of ram.

System Specs
Corsair Graphite Series 600T mid tower case w/ 6 internal side mounted 3.5" HDD bays
Enermax Revolution 85+ 1020w ATX12V PSU w/ 140mm fan
Intel Core i7 2600k CPU OC to 4.8+ GHz
Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler w/ dual 120mm fans
ASRock P67 Extreme motherboard w/ 2 x PCI-E x16 3.0 slots
Gigabit LAN, E-sata, 1394 and 8 USB onboard (6 x 2.0, 2 x 3.0) rear mounted
High Definition 7.1 audio onboard
16 GB (4 x 4096 MB) DDR3 1600 SDRAM
Crucial M4 256GB SSD
3 TB SATA-2 hard disk drive w/ 64 MB cache for mass data storage
SATA DVDRW / CDRW combo drive (black)
2 x Powercolor AMD Radeon HD 6970 2 GB PCI-E video card - Crossfire Configuration
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM

I really really appreciate your help. If unsure of the SSD let me know and I'll move that question to the appropriate forum.

Thanks so much Denim-187, you are such a help!

Not a problem, hope the problem is a simple software one.
You can always try benching 1 card and then the other, using a synthetic benchmark i.e 3dmark or Unigine heaven.

Generally you don't need to do anything special with updating graphics drivers, i would say you had a one off miss.
So if your going with the fresh install, i would go with it a normal process.

As with the SSD, there are some mods you need to do to optimize windows to work better with it.
First off, heres a tool ive been using that does alot for you automatically. (gets updated regularly)
This also modifies superfetch and prefetch and can check the status of TRIM.

SSD Tweaker: http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=6382&file=15&evp=ea84053bde88e5b555e847d406da30da

Set your BIOS to AHCI before windows install.
In windows after install:
Make sure scheduled defrag is DISABLED
The drives indexing is also DISABLED ( right click the drive in MY Computer > Properties, Un check the box that says "allow this drive to index" )
Also disable System Restore, ( this uses up alot of writecycles on the drive that you don't want, also disabling frees up space.)

After all this is done, run a Windows Experience Index Assesment...
This will notify the OS that your using an SSD and will optimize some things for you.

Goodluck with those cards mate, i know how it feels to have something go wrong with them, mini heart attacks tongue.gif

So after another long night of troubleshooting the issue persists...

I have benchmarked each card. Each card is performing as I expect it to within 1 FPS of each other in either of the slots. I then tried Crossfire again after moving cards around and after using a different bridge...

So I proceed to format my SSD reinstall windows 7, tweak for SSD... somehow I have 7.7 windows performance index on this where I used to have 7.9

After I got all of my windows updates done, I reinstalled catalyst 11.11... tried Crossfire after redownloading Crysis on steam... exact same problem. I checked load results and the second card is just not getting utilized it's at stock temps while the other one is at 66 degrees. GPUZ shows crossfire enabled and shows the two cards there.

I'm at a complete loss... it looks like something hardware related but the only thing I could come up with to cause this is a bad bridge and that just isn't the case. How can this work fine and all the sudden go to hell after a new driver upgrade. I've got both cards switches set to running on the factory default bios.

So pissed. I don't even know who to call to ***** at at this point. These are radeon powercolor 6970s and they don't even have a support phone number. Is there anything else you can think of?

This may or may not be pertinent, doubt it is, but when I used to fire up a game when the fans on the cards would spool up I could hear them through my stereo amplifiers and after a few minutes you couldn't hear the high pitch wine through my speakers anymore... they haven't done what they've always done (made that noise) since installing the 11.11 catalyst drivers... i'd go back to the last known working version of catalyst for me, but i've already tried that and still same issue. Ready to freak out.
