My Final x79 Build, Advice is CRUCIAL!

Hi everyone,

I'm putting together a silent PC for audio production hence the massive memory, not interested in water cooling, I have some very important questions I'll have number after my specs, so please try not to overlook them! I could really use your help.

Here we go:

Chasis:

http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=579&cl_index=1&sc_index=26&ss_index=69

CPU:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116492

Motherboard????

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=100006676&isNodeId=1&Description=x79+motherboard&x=0&y=0

CPU Cooler:

GPU:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127518

PSU: Fatality (re use)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341022

Memory x2:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231478

Insulation Foam, best on the market:

*My main concern is the CPU cooler blocking the DIMM slots, very worried about this...

1. I'm still not sure of the motherboards, I wan't something under $400 range with 8dimms. Do I need UEFI? I'm not even sure what that is but heard it's important.
ALso I'm looking at the Gigabyte x79 UD5

2. Notice the Chasis compatibility for CPU cooler is 160mm in height, but that is the EXACT compatibility for Noctua D14, plus I have insulation foam.....problem?
I'm going to change the stock fans of the tower as well to more silent onces.

3. I have old WD Caviar drives about 3 years old, should I be looking at SATA 6gb drives? I'll be streaming large audio files from my D drive to my OS and Music Program.

Cheers!

Everything looks fine, but honestly I would invest in SSDs if you're going to be streaming large raw audio files. Get two (or more, depending on your budget) to RAID with, that are a decent size, perhaps 120GB or more. If you get two, do a RAID 1 array. If you get 3 or more, do RAID 5.

No problems with the CPU cooler size? And the 8 Dimm slots being covered?

Raid scares me, especially with SSD's.
Trust me I know the advantage of SSD's with sample streaming, I may just cave and get a 460gb realssd.

RAID 0 is scary, RAID 1 isn't wink.gif. RAID 1 is a perfect mirror of each drive. So, given SSDs are more... fragile, than their platter counterparts, you have the data security of RAID 1, where if one drive weeps or dies, you have a perfect backup.

That said, a PCIe SSD is also an option, albeit an incredibly more expensive one. Instead, I'd get a few 120GB SSDs to RAID5 or RAID10 with.

I didnt even know you could raid ssds, will the performance be better?

Anyways this is off topic and I'm still confused about the tower fitting all of my parts and being silent

Yes raiding the SSD's will give you more speed again. The PC should be silent enough. To be honest though it will never be perfect. You can always get audio dampening foam and line the case with it. Simple stuff.

I'm not to sure about the cooler hitting the dimm slots. You could always go with a corsair hyrdo series. There's no height to them and leaves plenty of room for all your dimms. Plus the cooling is actually pretty good.

Just an idea.
