Which graphics cards in a FT02? - Page 2

no you dont need a reference cooler. it's safe to ignore anyone who says "heat rises" when talking about pc cooling. Just get some case fans and direct the heat out of the case and fresh air in.

@ ChaiBear,

Yes, I would recommend leaving one slot between these cards. In actual fact if you place them next to each other, in the same way as reference EVGA GTX 580's, the fan blades of the top card will come into contact with the base plate/PCB of the card below. Some people have used rubber or silicon strips to prevent this from happening, but I don't think it would be a long term solution, only for bench marking on a test rack.

In my FT02 the top card hits around 76 degrees under load, and the lower card about 64. At idle they are at around 37 degrees. I took a look at the Gene Z board - there does not appear to be sufficient spacing for a one slot gap.

Reworker,

That is great information to hear. That might actually change my plans in getting the Maximus Gene Z if I can't SLI with the 580 LXE. I am also considering a FT02.

Did your FT02 come with USB 3.0?

Also, some people were reporting paint quality issues in terms of chipping on the side panels. Did you see that on yours?

(BTW, I Rep+ you, but for some reason it didn't show up yet...Hopefully soon)

Thanks!

@ ChaiBear,

The Maximus IV Extreme Z is a good fit in the FT02 and will allow you to SLI MSi GTX580 XE's with a one slot spacing gap. Although there are other, cheaper options if the O/C option on the MIVE are not essential to you. However, apart from the technical features, the MIVE is a great looking board with its black/red colour scheme - so much better than the blue themed motherboards that Asus has outside ROG.

Indeed, I have experienced the paint chipping issues. Mainly on the widowed side panel at the corners, despite exercising great care when I remove/replace the side panel to clean the filters. In fact the chipping became more of an issue and it ended up with me performing a RMA on the case. My sig rig is now in a HAF X, which was to be used for a LGA2011 build over Xmas.

My FT02 came with the AP181 fans, but not USB 3.0. I bought my case from a local dealer in Prague, although certain German retailers did have the USB 3.0 in stock at the time for a price premium. Back on the subject of the paint chipping, some advice I can give you is that it tends to occur at the top left and top right of the windowed side panel. Exercise great care when replacing the panel as to minimise metal to metal contact in these areas. Thanks for the rep:)

I think the 90 degree rotated cases cool well because the air has a clear line from the intake directly onto the hot components and back out the exhaust, without any 5.25 and 3.5 inch bays in the way
