No worries. Gentoo can be a tough nut to crack, for sure. Novice Linux users looking to try it should know that.

I've got an issue with the first command. This is after changing to VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" in /etc/make.conf. I understand it's telling me I need to make changes to my USE flags, but the information that follows doesn't make it clear what flags need added/removed...
Code:
sanctuary ~ # emerge -uDNpv world #

 * IMPORTANT: config file '/etc/portage/package.use' needs updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES section of the emerge
 * man page to learn how to update config files.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

there's a lot of problems there... noveau should be gone, and you have something invalid in package.use as indicated by the 'needs updating' .. it looks like you enabled the debug flag and probably a ton of other stuff you probably didn't want to.

post:

emerge --info && echo && cat /etc/portage/package.use

[ebuild R ] x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.26 USE="-libkms -static-libs" VIDEO_CARDS="nouveau -intel -radeon -vmware" 0 kB
.. hmmm thumb.gif

it looks like you enabled a bunch of stuff ..common mistake... debug is rarely needed for deep troubleshooting and attaching gdb to the binary.. which i haven't had to do since xorg was brand new and barely worked.

did you add this intentionally or [ebuild N ] kde-base/kde-env-4.6.5 USE="(-aqua) (-kdeenablefinal)" 0 kB

and i assume you've done a --sync within the past 24 hours ?

I applied the Windows method of fixing things...reinstall. :/

Here's where I stand now. I did enable quite a few USE flags and recompile the kernel...

that looks good.. you didn't have to reinstall ... but whatever, repetition never hurts learning. now all you need to do is add "X" to your use flags in /etc/make.conf, as in the guide. set VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse" as previously discussed.

emerge -pv xorg-server # note the deps, specifically the xorg-drivers package and nvidia-drivers, nothing about noveau
emerge -v xorg-server # really you shouldn't need to add any flags at this point
startx # it should work.. but you'll just be in fvwm from 1980.. get out of there and run

emerge -v fluxbox
echo "exec startfluxbox" >> ~/.xinitrc
startx

don't worry about any use flags yet. you can always check emerge -pv and change them, then just rebuild with emerge -uDNpv world (or just a-subset of-packages) .. do not add them liberally like you did before, only when you know you want the flag add it. that's what lean is all about. in fact you may want to add things like -cups -kde -gnome -ipv6 as globals.. but be careful with those as well. Again it's never a problem to change, you should only need to go back to the stage3 tarball in the very very worst scenarios (accidental rm -rf without backup or emerge -C linux-headers ..< do NOT do that!!!! wink.gif )

good luck, read that portage guide and you should be all set.

Why don't you run FreeBSD + fluxbox.

If you talking about the built it yourself philosophy, Gentoo just copied FreeBSDs design and concepts but done it poorly. Archlinux is another BSD clone done poorly. Archlinux is basically like running FreeBSD current, they just can't be bothered with testing and having a real release process, so they slap on that "rolling release" tag and call it a day. It shows because it breaks very easily.

no alsa and flash on freebsd... otherwise i'd probably run it. it's been a while since i've tried it, i need to check again. ports is a little easier to use than portage, but they're by and large the same thing. And also agreed that the arch packages tend to have a lot of bugs, not as much as ubuntu but still a lot.

Alsa is rubbish, not having it is a good thing especially since FreeBSD sound implementation actually works properly and it has been working for many years while Linux devs have been running around in circles with re-implementations. Flash is rubbish too but it does work on FreeBSD if you need it. Flash days are numbered anyway and the sooner it goes the better.

I'm still running my very first installation of FreeBSD on my home server. This system is so solid I just update it and it just keeps on going. I've switched hardware as well. This is probably why FreeBSD has such a crude installer because you don't need it that often.

As I understand it, FreeBSD is different from typical Linux distros, but I don't understand exactly how that is. Do I understand correctly that it doesn't actually utilize the Linux kernel? Does the same software that is used on Linux work the same way? Does learning Linux apply to FreeBSD as well and vice versa?
