HD Capture Card suggestions?

Thread Starter
I'm pretty clueless about xbox 360s, but I need to get a capture card for someone for christmas and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on one. For price, just don't show me one that's like $400 or something lol.

Anyways, things he wanted to do were record and upload to youtube. Possibly edit it on his laptop if he wants to. I've been seeing that they redirect output to your computer monitor, is this true or what? He has a fairly old TV, a 34-36" tube tv. And don't forget to suggest anything else that I may need to buy for it to work the day he gets it and all that.

Thanks.

Well, looks like there isn't an option for a laptop user unless I'm missing something.

http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1445-Definition-Personal-Recorder/dp/B005P5UMVM/ref=pd_cp_e_1

Would something like this work for what the person needs? Just upload game recordings to youtube, etc?

I don't have an HD-PVR but I believe it can be used on a laptop because it just connects to the computer via USB.

if he wants a HD capture card he is going to have to get a different TV. Otherwise he is stuck using SD capture cards like a dazzle.

If he does get a HD tv so he can use a HD cap card then I would get this one:http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1212-Definition-Personal-Recorder/dp/B0018LX0DY/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1321746268&sr=1-1

The other one with gaming compatibility simply means it comes with the component cable that he should really already have. The HD capture cards will take in componant video and put the video on the TV and computer but if he were to use composit (RCA) then it can only be displayed on the PC in the recording software. The only output to TV is component.

Also dont think that he can just hook it up to the computer and play with his SD cables using only his monitor because it is IMPOSSIBLE. there is some input lag on the computer usually between 2-4 seconds.

I use the AVerTV PCI Capture card but I would of bought the Hauppague but it was out of my budget at the time. It has an HDMI input but you can 1) only capture up to 1080i and 2) you can't record HDCP content. So it's just easier to use the component input. It also only records stereo but it IS internal.

The HD PVR also only does up to 1080i if you want 1080p... which for youtube its not needed at all, you would need a cap card (probably internal) with hdmi inputs and a Raid array to record full 1080p video. Even if he wanted to use the cap card you had it would not work since he is using an older tube TV with composite inputs (SD) and is not compatible with HD capture cards.

For capture-cards HD-PVR is the most used and is highly regarded among the community. If he gets/uses a desktop then it opens up the Black Magic Pro which is a PCI slot capture card, and is less used than the PVR but is good nonetheless. And finally if he is going Standard def then Dazzle, or Roxio Game Capture is his best bet (Roxio being the better of the two). Hope this helps, and good luck.

as of now his only option is the dazzle, the roxio (like the hd pvr) only inputs and outputs component and the older tube TVs use composite (red, white, yellow). With the Tube TV he is going to have to use SD cables... which in my opinion is horrible quality and not even worth the money. He should just wait until he has a newer TV so that he can do HD.

He either needs a new TV or get the $50 Dazzle. But if he does get a HDTV, look into Hauppauge HD PVR or the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle/Pro forgot which one.
