SSD for Budget Build

Thread Starter
I'm trying to decide on an SSD for a budget build. The rig has an i3-2100 and will be used primarily for internet browsing and basic office software such as Word and Excel. It may transition to light gaming in the future, but that really isn't relevent. It only needs to be 60-64GB as it will just be for Windows 7 and some basic applications. The end users of the rig aren't very tech literate, so reliability is more important long-term than speed. Maximum budget is around $120. The current options:

Crucial M4 64GB ~$110-120
OCZ Vertex 3 60GB $72.64
Kingston SSDNow V100 Series 64GB $69.99

In a normal situation, the M4 would be the clear winner - it gets constant praise around here for speed and reliability - however, the significantly lower cost of the OCZ and Kingston is making me second-guess that decision. The Vertex is a lot faster in some circumstances, but is smaller and has reliability issues (though they are supposedly fixed). The Kingston is much slower than either (and much faster than a HDD regardless) and reduces the cost without the reliability problems. Still leaning towards the M4, but dropping the cost of the build by $40-50 is tempting.

As a caveat, the OCZ is cheap due to a Newegg coupon and a rebate. The Kingston also has a rebate. Any word on a coupon/rebate for the M4 headed down the interwebtubes?

I like the OCZ. I'd get the Kingston if you really dont want to spend much.

A lot of people will say that Crucial is the way to go because of reliability.

I'll say the Vertex 3 is now a safe play because of the firmware updates that helped the BSOD issues that people had.

I own 3 of them and I haven't had an issue updating any of them or having BSODs.

Personal choice here on this one, but I'd stay away from Kingston.

The issue I'm having with the M4 vs. Vertex 3 comparison is that all of the reviews are for the 120GB version and up; the smaller drives are slower. The best indicator of performance for an OS and application drive is the 4k Random Read, correct? Here's the breakdown:

Crucial M4 64GB 40,000 IOPS (Crucial), 45,000 IOPS (Newegg)
OCZ Vertex 3 60GB 13,000 IOPS (OCZ and Newegg)
Kingston SSDNow V100 64GB Couldn't locate any official numbers, but saw some benches on a few random forums of ~3,000 IOPS (?)

Is the M4 really ~200% faster than the Vertex?! I doubt it. Obviously, the only reason to go with the Kingston is for Vertex reliability concerns. What's the confidence level of the firmware fix?

Yeah, but I work retail - 12 hour shift starting at 3am - so I'm afraid all the good stuff will be sold out by the time I get home. If I can even walk by then.

Get the Vertex 3. The OCZ 3 series destroy the M4. The M4s were only popular because of the OCZ sandforce issues, but that was fixed a while ago. People just don't recommend them, because they bought them and for whatever other reason don't now. Before the firmware problems, OCZ was the best by miles and still is.

Use promo code: BLKNOVSSD to get $16.35. I think it works for any SSD.

The OCZ Vertex 3 60GB would be $93 shipped or $73 shipped after rebate.

I am trying to decide on the same thing basically, an OCZ Agility 3 vs waiting for an M4 over in my thread .
I keep hearing that OCZ still has issues then I hear things like this that they have been fixed mad.gif

Check Newegg reviews. The only non 5/5 stars are the rare DOA.
