Sapphire 6950 2GB - More Voltage? - Page 4

Let me join in with my experience on this matter as well.

Got a Sapphire Dual Fan HD6950 2GB which unlocked fine with the BIOS switch and now runs 900-1400 on 1.18v in TriXX.

Wanted more ofc so I tried to mod my BIOS with RBE. Gave a BSOD as expected cause I read that somewhere.
MSI AB Beta doesnt unlock voltage.
Toxic BIOS gives huge graphical errors.
RBE editting of the 1408 shader BIOS didn't help either.
Going to try some other manufacturers BIOS but the non-ref PCB will probably cause it not to work...

We really have to keep going on this matter cause this forum is the only one where this matter is actively discussed.

Have you done the powertune mod yet?

Nope, haven't done that yet. But how does that affect the voltage you can set in either the BIOS or in TriXX?

EDIT: Gotta be honest, I can't even find how to do the mod on google. Probably my dismal searching skills but k.

Could ya please gimme a link or a little tutorial how to do it?

The power tune mod helps a little with stability, but it also stops thermal throttling. With the toxic's and some other cards you kinda need to give Power tune a bump. I would try it at 10% or 20% to see if there is a change in how your card acts. With no power tune my card kinda sucks. OC's like a dumb dog. With +20% my card is a total monster!

Oh like that. I thought you ment the 50% mod.
Mine is running with +20% powertune.
Got the GPU Overdrive enabled in CCC with stock clocks and a +20% powertune.
TriXX sets the clocks with a delay of 5 seconds so it applies the clocks after CCC has. So the clocks and voltages go to TriXX's level but the powertune stays applied.

Only problem is that I, like many others, can't adjust the VGPU past 1.180v and when you edit either the 00 or 03 profile in the BIOS the card won't boot into Windows anymore cause the drivers just BSOD with a system_service_exception BSOD.

1.180v is very low since it's pretty much stock VID for a HD6970 so I am pleased that it does 900-1400Mhz stable. 910Mhz crashes the driver after 15-20 minutes of load and 920 gives artifacts.
VRAM anything over 1400Mhz and it gives the off-centered split screen effect.

Was already thinking of a hard-mod for the VGPU haha but that would be a shame for my brand new card...
I aint switching it for a different brand cause this card looks magnificent and is very cool and quiet. (doesn't even hit 60c in BF3 even with unlock + OC)

Yea, you have found the problem with most cards. A 6970 can handle more voltage than a 6950. That is why you are voltage limited. It's also what make's the TOXIC so potent. Its a 6950 that almost always unlocks and has tons of voltage head room. I may be wrong but I think your stuck with the voltage you have.

Very wierd since any othet brand HD6950, modded or not, can go up to 1.30v with unofficial overclocking.

It's just the Sapphire cards that have their voltage locked to 1.18v.
Maybe I should consider returning it and getting a different brand card such as a MSI TFIII or a Toxic..

Tried VBIOS from AMD Reference, ASUS DCII, Sapphire HD6970 Dual Fan, AMD HD6970 Reference and MSI TFIII.

All BIOS had the same response. No POST of the PC with a VGA error LED on my board.

Running my backed up Cayman.bin 6950 modded BIOS again. When I up the ''Boot'' or Clock 00 voltage from 1.14v to say, 1.22v it works but it BSOD's still when done loading Windows or when you install drivers.

Voltage registers aren't available yet within RBE and MSI AB doesn't reconize the voltage regulators either. Great.

It really does look like we're all stuck on 1.18v here..
