Well, From my perspective, the LGA2011's are just ridiculous, and i dont see a need to be that ridiculous, Thats for a TRUE enthusiast that will buy whatever they can get theyre hands on, me, eh I'm happy with what i got now that most of you guys have told me to stick with the 920. I'm not that hardcore of an enthusiast lol.

If I were you I would get a new mobo and a self contained WC like the Antec 620 or 920. OC it to 3.6 then eventually add a second 6870 (when a smoking deal presents itself.) You would have a killer rig then!

Well I already bought a Cooler Master 212+ (before i realized it didnt fit my crapppy gateway mobo, so its good for the future mobo) and ive seen a lot of good things about it, so i wont be going for water cooled. especially since im not going to even try to push 4Ghz.

I say you should stick with the 920 like I have, I have thought of upgrading to a 2500k or 2600k but i'm happy with what i got atm and i won't be changing till Ivy bridge comes out but even then I will wait a bit for prices to drop.

I'm still rocking my i7 920 and its also a C0 stepping and I have it at 3.6ghz
and it chews through all the games i throw at it still.
I once pushed it to 4.0ghz but it BSOD after 15mins of prime.

6870 crossfire is amazingly good because of the immense scaling on the 68xx cards.
The only reason i didn't xfire mine is because i couldn't justify £100 on a full cover waterblock.

anyways, im babbling here,
the sabertooth is a very good board and i have a lot of friends running their i7's with it with no probs whatsoever.
it is also pretty good at overclocking.

Since you have posted, The only concern i have about getting another 6870 for crossfire, is the small amount of room between the two x16 slots on the board itself. Have you seen or know anything about that? im pretty strict about keeping my components cool especially my video cards

like they said, just get a new board and oc the hell out of it. the 920 is still a beast for gaming, and will be for quite some time.

That seems like rather poor planning.

If one knows they are going to go with Ivy Bridge, just go LGA 1155 now and save yourself the expense of the LGA 1366 board. Sure, you'll instead have to buy another CPU in the meantime, but A) it'll add performance unlike the board, and B) that current Core i7 920 CPU will sell for more than that current OEM board will (not to mention a Core i5 2500K will likely sell for more later than an LGA 1366 board as well).

If that sheds any light to things OP, what are your future plans? If you plan on sticking with the Core i7 920 for a good year or two, then it makes more sense to set a foundation up for it now. If you're going to jump to LGA 1155, there is little sense in not doing it now if you will anyway.
true say there is a small amount of room but i don't think it will be that bad if you have decent airflow,
you have a HAF 912 right?

If you have the side fan installed then i don't think it will be a problem ^^
as long as you have sufficient airflow then your all good!
6870's don't run super hot newais, at least i don't think from when i had one.
