witcher 2 is a great game but tbh doesn't hold a candle against skyrim
post #14 of 39
Skyrim for sure, I have a feeling BF3 won't get any or little attention for a really long time.

Nah you're not the only one. I got bored to tears with Skyrim after only about 8 hours of playing it. The game is way too easy and any dungeon is pretty much explorable right off the bat without the need for leveling up or focusing on character development. You can probably beat Skyrim with the default equipment, that's how easy that it is. The characters also feel bland and lack personality. Towns also feel empty a long with the game world in general. In The Witcher you can go into an Inn and it feels a live with plenty of stuff to do and people to talk to, not so much in Skyrim. Its a shame too because Skyrim has a ton of potential.

I hate Bethesda.

The Witcher 2 plays like Mass Effect with everything done better. It has a focused mature storyline, tight gameplay, excellent graphics and a morality / choice system like none other. With the new patch, technical issues are minimized and the Arena mode is excellent. The Alchemy and Inventory systems werent the best, but you spent less than 10% of the time doing that stuff anyway.

Skyrim, if Bethesda's older stuff is to count for anything, is just a large run around time waster. A 6 hour mediocre campaign with a 1000 hour cross country tour of vast expanses of popping textures and random noises. Riding horses through trees in Oblivion / Morrowind and trekking through wasteland in Fallout 3 is cool for about 40 minutes until it gets incredibly repetitive.

YOU ARE ENCUMBERED AND CANNOT RUN.
YOU STOLE AN ITEM, RUN FROM THE POLICE.
YOU NEED TO FIND A BED.
YOU ARE UGLY AS ****.

EDIT:
To sound more civilized, I feel Bethesda games are just overrated. Regardless of what they release it reaches critical acclaim and garners a massive following.

To quote someone on a different forum:

- Potential game-breaking bugs and glitches. I remember accidentally getting my character stuck in a wall once when playing Morrowind. I was forced to reload my last save and lost approximately three hours' worth of progress. I've learned to implement the tried and true "save early and save often" axiom when playing Bethesda games.

- Wonky combat. Morrowind is perhaps one of the most egregious offenders, with its simulated dice rolls that have you miss 9 out of 10 swings with a weapon you aren't proficient at. Oblivion improved on it somewhat, but it still largely consists of hyperactive mouse clicking. As for Fallout, generally the best approach to combat is lining up a bunch of headshots over and over again using V.A.T.S.

- Lackluster story. When you boil it down, most plots of Bethesda games are "a great peril threatens the land, and you're the only one that can defeat it."

- Awkward implementation of NPCs. They typically only have a handful of voice actors and repeat many of the same lines. They also have a tendency to stare at the player constantly, giving them a creepy vibe. Then there's the issue of psychic guards in the Elder Scroll games that are more than happy to chop you up into bloody little chunks because you tried to steal someone's napkin.

This wasn't the best time to ask this question, OP. People tend to remember "fresh" things best. If Skyrim was released when TW2 was and TW2 - last week, everyone would be shouting "TW2!" as a response to this thread.
If you are, as you claim to be, an RPG nerd, you needn't have asked this question in the first place. The obvious response is, play both. However, play TW2 first. By the time you complete it, some amazing patches & mods for Skyrim will have come out, improving your gameplay experience.
