GTX 580 dilemma?

Thread Starter
Hey everyone! Shaq here, I'm currently in a small but in some ways big dilemma. I need to get a GPU for my upcoming build but need some advice on which GTX 580 to get (read my upcoming system here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1168630/my-very-first-build-intel/0_100#post_15700269 and feel free to post there).

I am currently leaning towards the MSI Lighting Edition but am not satisfied that it is the right choice (link if you didn't click the above: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=17070 ).

Now I am not limited to this card, but it seems to be the best in terms of cooling and overclocking. Is there a better card than this? I will be playing at a resolution of 1080p if that helps you.

Thanks for your time.

I can't even count the number of Lightning threads on here if that's a good indicator biggrin.gif

It depends on the game. I've read that BF3 is trying to use over 2GB of VRAM :O I'm an AMD user so I don't have a whole lot of knowledge in the Nvidia area. Someone more knowledgeable will probably give you better info.

Ok well,

I wouldn't have gone with that PSU, have a look here http://www.overclock.net/t/183810/faq-recommended-power-supplies and pick one of the recommended 850w PSU's.

You should be ok for SLi 580's on that, however you can't SLi the new GTX 560Ti 2win cards. It's already SLi'ed. Also, you've picked the 1.5Gb card, you'd be better off with the 3GB card.

Thanks TheJesus, 2GB of VRAM! Oh, that means I might have to get something with more oomph. What would you guys and gals suggest? I really did want to go with a single 580 because of the reviews. I read somewhere that BF3 only requires about 1.2GB of VRAM. I saw a graph that showed a single GTX 580 doing BF3 at ~55 FPS on ultra settings at 1080p.

Could anyone help me with this, I thought 1.5GB of VRAM would be plenty?

See the above link for the 3GB version of the MSI Lightning.

Really? I used this PSU calculator ( http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp ) and it said I only need around 650W for my setup and thats with my CPU overclocked to 4.5GHz, so 750W would be plenty for me right?

Also isn't 3GB of VRAM overkill for my setup (1080p, one monitor with no plans on anymore) I don't think the extra $70 is worth it? The Lightning Edition also scores better in games that don't demand more VRAM and also cools better.

Thanks.

The PSU is fine as I said, but I would have gone with the recommended list. Also, you pointed out that you were considering SLi. That PSU will do it but you might be better with an 850w for a little headroom.

I can't stress enough, this is if you're going to SLi GTX580's.

Also, the amount of memory is worth the extra $70, basically when you start running games that have bigger textures it'll help a lot. Also you're getting double the Vram for an extra $70, it's a no brainer really.

Also, the Vram isn't just for resolution, it's for the bigger textures and bigger games.

I did mention that I would go with GTX 560 Ti's in SLI but I didn't mention GTX 580's in SLI. I wouldn't plan on doing 580's in SLI. Sure enough if I were gaming at a higher resolution I would get the 3GB version, but I am only going to be gaming at 1080p. Could you provide me with some links that compare the Lightning Xtreme Edition to the Lighting Edition, this is the only one I could find: http://www.guru3d.com/article/msi-geforce-gtx-580-lightning-xtreme-edition-review/ and in this review it is clear that there is not much advantage even on Metro 2033 at a resolution of 1200p.

If I am going to get the 3GB Lightning Xtreme, I need more convincing tongue.gif

Its your money, but just to have future-proofing is nice. Would you rather pay $70 upfront or have to get an entire new card later on?

Dude,

It's not my job to convince you, it makes no difference to me whether you get it or not. You asked for advice, you got good advice and it's down to you to either follow it or not.

Metro 2033 is about 3 years old now anyway and the textures aren't that big however with games like BF3 and other games that are coming out they will utilise it.
