Speakers and headset at the same time

Thread Starter
Currently, I have my speakers hooked to a Sony receiver, which in turn is hooked to a Rocketfish 5.1 sound card via SPDIF. I also want to hook my turtle beach headsets for late night gaming. My headsets are the 3.5mm jack pin style. It appears if I have the Sony receiver hooked up via SPDIF, the headset will not work. Even if I unhook the receiver, they will still not work. But the headsets themselves work as I test them out in my laptop. So, I am wondering if the ports on the Rocketfish share or something and you can only hook up one type of connection. I am baffled that it does not work even after I unhook my SPDIF connection. So, what are my options here?

1. Get another sound card to run my headset?
2. Get a USB headset?
3. Something wrong with my sound card and both should work at the same time. I need to fix.

FYI, mother board does not have on-board sound. Also, I posted this before forum changes and I cannot pull the thread anymore.

If you get a new sound card you can use both your headset and receiver with it, If you receiver setup is 5.1 you can use the Encoding Features of the Xonar DG which encodes analog 5.1 signal to digital for your games so they will output in 5.1, Then you can plug your headset into the analog outputs.

Then Enable the encoding when your wanna use your speakers and if your headset is 5.1 then disable it to switch to 5.1 analog. the Xonar DG goes for 30ish dollars.

+rep for the suggestion.

So what you are saying is that it is a limitation of my current sound card. If I go with Xonar DG, I can do the switching between receiver and headset with relative ease.

Yes as the Xonar panel as a drop down box for selecting speakers and headphones.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I have a similar question. I am looking on using a 2.1 speaker set (either a SP2500 or ProMedia 2.1, depending which one I can get cheapest in the next week or so) and a pair of headphones. I'd like both to be fed the same source simultaneously so I can mute/turn off the speakers as needed and put on headphones without having to swap output sources either via soundcard driver or unplugging/replugging cables in.

I know the SP2500 has a headphone jack on the control center, is there a headphones toggle on/off function on there as well, so I can just leave the headphones plugged in? Or, is there another way to set it up without using a splitter/y cable. Both outputs would be analog. I am using a Xonar DS.
