Hey, I'm new here. Help overclocking my CPU please.

Okay so recently, I bought Skyrim and I've been wanting to max out Skyrim. I put it on ultra without overclocking the CPU and I get like 25fps. When I overclocked it using my motherboard's preset, I got close to 30fps.

I have the i5 2500K, Stock fan and heatsink, 2 case fans, HIS ATi Radeon HD 6850, Thermaltake V3 Black Edition.

Please help me guys. Someone recommended that I come here to ask about Overclocking

Welcome to OCN.net! First, I'm pretty sure overclocking your CPU isn't going to fix your framerate issue. No way your bottlenecking that single 6850 with your i5. Have you checked to see what kind of load your CPU and GPU is getting?

Please tell me what all these terms mean. I'm sorry, I am just getting into the custom PC building because I finally got a job biggrin.gif

Bottleneck? What kind of load? As in temps at 100% using Prime95?

Please tell me how to check "what kind of loads [my] CPU and GPU is getting" thanks man!

what I mean is when your running the game, is your CPU maxing out on 2core's? what % of your GPU is being used?

A bottleneck with your CPU would mean that your CPU is too slow to keep your Graphics card(GPU) supplied with info. I know your CPU is not holding back your GPU. You can use a program like Open Hardware Monitor to see what kind of usage your getting out of your CPU and GPU.

What FPS do you get on lower setting, say high?

I'll let you know as soon as I get home. I'm on campus at the moment.

Well, whenever I play Skyrim, I set it on ultra but I set shadows to high and put AF to 8x and AA to 8x as well.

Frame rate is bearable.

are you using new drivers?

After looking at toms hardware bench with Skyrim, I think you should be playing at med or high settings at the most.

Also all you really need to do to OC your CPU is to go into the BIOS and change the CPU multiplier.

The drivers I'm using are the Catalyst 11.11 drivers

That's all there is to overclock? I don't have to change the voltage or anything?

Well in my BIOS, there's nothing that says Multiplier. I have an ASUS motherboard, UEFI styled Bios. Could be Phoenix or Megatrends. Not sure,

My motherboard is the ASUS P8Z68-V Pro.

Hey I'm looking at the Benchmark and the Geforce 460 1GB SLI seems to perform well. Is that one video card or two video cards?

yes, there is adjusting Voltage involved in it, but you should be able to start off with a decent OC with out a voltage bump. SLI is using two Nvidia cards. AIT/AMD calls it Crossfire.

Thank you so much, but should I buy a new heatsink? Watercooled or air?
