Need help/tips on how to overclock. (g53sw-xn1 gtx 460m.)

Thread Starter
Hey all, I've been playing bf3 on my g53 laptop with only 30 fps.. and I was wondering if overclocking would increase performance? I am a total noob and I have never overclocked before, so this will be my first time. and I need help! and I really don't want to destroy my laptop, so if someone would please walk me through a tutorial on how to overclock, and all the benefits to overclocking. that would be awesome!

Also, I have the 285.79 Nvidia beta drivers installed

Thanks in advance!

Download MSI Afterburner , install it , overclock your gpu to about 740MHz ( According to it's default clock 675MHz ) , Now open BF3 check the difference and check stability with Furmark .

Easy , right ? biggrin.gif

MSI Afterburner will overclock the graphics card, and let you wach temps too.

Most laptop BIOS' dont provide for overclocking in the BIOS.

biggrin.gif , and I forgot to tell you to watch your temps ( with HWMonitor ) and don't do anything crazy because you might kill your chip . ( don't worry it's safe ) .

Download Furmark and just click BURN-IN Test and leave it for 10 minutes and see the maximum temperature ( Furmark will give you the max temp ) .

If Afterburner works on that laptop's GPU I'll be surprised. I only ever got nvidia's system tools to work on actually changing the GPU clocks on my G50. OP you should grab GPU-Z to check that Afterburner is actually changing the clock speeds. Plus it will have temp monitoring. As for Furmark I never really saw the point; I just OC'd and tried to game and if it didn't work after an hour (driver crash) then I would lower the OC. Usually, before the driver crash you'll notice odd things happening like frame jumps and such to indicate a bad OC. If you can try aiming for the gtx560m's clocks. That would be pretty good. Good luck.

Actually Afterburner works on almost all new mobile GPUs , all the 500M and 400M series are supported .

Focus on getting the most out of your memory clock. It matters more than the pathetic core clock you will probably manage. Trust me. The bandwidth that runs that huge 1.5GB framebuffer will be noticed. biggrin.gif

I hit 760/1520/3000

-Before-
675/1350/2500
Pixel Fillrate: ~16.2 GPixels/s
Texture Fillrate: ~21.6 GTexels/s
Memory bandwidth: ~60 GB/s

-After-
760/1520/3000
Pixel Fillrate: ~18 GPixels/s
Texture Fillrate: ~24 GTexels/s
Memory bandwidth: ~72 GB/s

I've seen people hit 800+ on the core. Personally I prefer to have better memory bandwidth than a higher core clock on something like this. The bandwidth on the 4890 is what made it outperform the 5770 despite having the exact same clock speeds and fill rates.
