The X79 chipset supports 4 SATA II ports and 2 SATA III ports natively. The R4E has an extra onboard controller for the additional 2 SATA III ports.

I wanted to do 4 SSD's in RAID 0 on SATA III, but because of the board using 2 seperate controllers for the SATA III ports, it is impossible to achieve that. The additional on board controller doesnt even support RAID at all (wonderful idea ASUS...).

I chose to not run the SSDs on the SATA II ports due to the RE4 drives only being SATA II and the Blu-Rays being SATA II. Also, 1 of the SATA III ports on the extra controller is either bad or the controller is bad, so I am out 1 SATA port there. I wouldn't have been able to keep the multiple RAID arrays and both Blu-Rays if I used the SATA II ports for 4 drives in R0. Also, the speed increase on SATA III over SATA II kind of negated putting more drives in the array on SATA II.

Awesome, Awesome build log. Wish I had been in on this one from the beginning. Learned a few tricks reading through all of it. 4 pumps? Insane. And all that sleeving looks amazing. So much of it. Love the case also.

Actually no. Pumps don't really have a push pull set up. Basically, if you put them in series, it doubles the head it can overcome (the amount of force that is pushing the fluid), in parallel, it keeps the same head as 1 pump but doubles the flow rate.

Initially, I wasn't sure how much head was needed to overcome all the blocks in each loop (head = static pressure it can overcome basically). I also wanted redundancy incase a pump happened to fail. I now know I only need 1 pump to run each line and the dual pump is just serving as a redundant safety feature. Faster flow rate isn't always better, as the water/coolant has to have time to absorb some of the heat being dissipated by the blocks.

Currently, the GPU line pumps are running at 30% each and the CPU line pumps are running at 40% each (on 24v input curve, not the 12v curve of the d5's). My water lines get to within 1-2 degrees F of my ambient room temp when the gentle typhoons are at max (5400 rpm). I run them normally at the 3-3.4k mark and my water lines are consistently 4-5 degrees F above ambient room temp.

I did investigate push vs pull on my fan orientation over the rads. However, I am somewhat lucky as my senior project for my ME degree was to optimize a condenser in an air conditioning system. Due to how small PC rads are, the difference between push and pull fan configurations is irrelevant. I get the same performance in either configuration. What is more important is the total surface area tht air passes over on the radiator and the pressure the fans can overcome.

That was a bit of a long winded answer, but hopefully it explains my entire thought process :-)

Impressive to get 1-2 degrees difference. I would have to wear earplugs though at 5,400 rpm. What kind of flow rate are you getting with the pumps set that low?

Can't agree with you more... obsolete is bull ****... if they can send a man to the moon with computing power less than your modern calculator... there will be plenty of good uses for your computer in the upcoming years.

Obselete to me.. is building it.. putting it on display for bragging rights, and never using it... if you are going to put it to good use daily.. maybe make a few bucks with it for work.. HELL ya.. well worth every penny IMO.

Awesome rig!!! well though out and awesome choice of parts and theme...

Cheers!
