Random CPU Spikes In Task Manager?

Thread Starter
I'm running only Firefox 9.0 and an IMing program yet I'm seeing lots of random CPU spikes in task manager.

Any idea what is causing this or what tests I can do to pinpoint the program/services causing it?

Thanks, just ask for any more info.

open up another instance of task manager and click the processes tab. then click the cpu tab and make sure the little arrow is pointing down. thatll make whatever is using the highest cpu resources up first. that should give you a general idea of whats causing those spikes.

Do you see the same spikes idling at your desktop with no programs loaded? It could be a hard drive issue.

Just use Resource Monitor.

I just downloaded a program called Process Explorer by microsoft and it's pretty nifty!
It's telling me that PresentationFontCache.exe is the hog, and I've googled it and it seems to be a common problem, going to see what people did to fix it and report back with results.

@Cody, hmm hard drive problems can cause CPU spikes? How so, and what kind of problem, like a dying hard drive?

I'm not 100% on this, but I'm pretty sure that a dying hard drive can cause cpu spikes.

Well problem (temporarily) solved. Killed the PresentationFontCache and everything is nice now. Just need to figure out how to stop it from starting up in the first place.

the PresentationFontCache is only usefull if you use wpf (windows presentation foundation) applications. if not, start services.msc and disable it.

Tried looking for it in there, it's not in there :/.
I also tried just deleting the .exe of it, but it gave me access denied, and when I tried to grant myself read/write/whatever permission it also wouldn't let me.
