Plasticizer Leaching: Stay Away from Tygon 3603 Tubing.

Thread Starter
A few weeks after my first WC build I noticed my clear Tygon tubing was fogging up. At first I thought it was algae or some other bacterial growth. But after searching the internet and a forum post, I came to the conclusion that it was plastizier in the tubing that was causing the discoloration. Apparently the 3603 tygons are infamous for this issue yet many people recommend this tubing.

So I ripped out all the tubing and ordered a new brand. Primoflex Pro LRT this time. But as an experiment, I mixed both the tygon 3603 and the primoflex in the same loop.

  • Same water.
  • Same loop.
  • Same conditions.
  • Installed at the same time.
  • Distilled water, Silver Coil, 2 drops Dead Water, nothing else

Yet after only a month. Look at the results...

450

Seriously, why would anyone recommend or use Tygon? It's expensive as hell, and turns into this fugly color after only a month. Now I know most people use colored tubing/dyes, but even then. Do you really want this gunk in your loop? Discoloring tubing and potentially clogging water blocks?

So there it is. Don't use Tygon 3603 tubing.

Wow you invested a month into this experiment! +Rep for you man. I'm putting my loop together slowly but surely for christmas and was thinking about clear tubing but the discoloration I've seen in some loops really put me off of it. Was thinking Primochill UV blue or clear. This provides me with more info for my decision thanks! thumb.gif

I chose Tygon after reading up and listening to people talk about how it's "pricy but the best" , "laboratory grade tubing", and "its super flexible and never kinks" I never even heard of plasticizers before this issue, let alone know that Tygon 3909 were filled to the brim with the stuff.

I just wanted to put this out to help someone else out there not fall into the same trap I did. I probably spent about 40 dollars on tygon tubing and a lot of wasted time trying to figure out the clouding.

Thanks.

I did this to be 100% sure that it was the tubing itself causing the issue and not something I did.

The clear primoflex still looks new after a month. But that could change in the months to come of course.

Tygon R-3603 does it too.

The Tygon B-44-4X tubing I replaced it with is starting to look bad too, and it supposedly has less plasticizer in it.

I've been thinking of trying Tygon plasticizer free tubing, but it is very expensive...

Im still waiting to see if anyone used the Tygon plasticizer free tubing yet. But until then, Im just going to stick with the Pro LRT.

Do not buy the Tygon 2375 plasticizer free tubing. I've been using Tygon 2375 tubing in my rig for 4 months now. Brand new the tubing wasn't the clearest and would get scuffed up pretty easily.

Also after a couple months they started to get a very light yellowish tint.

I'm slightly confused are you actually talking about Tygon 3603 as I've never heard of 3909?

I know that Tygon B-44-4X does have plasticiser but even so that picture is shocking as it is beverage tubing specially formulated for transferring a wide variety of beverages including soft drinks, fruit juices, flavored teas and bottled water!

My picture was of R-3603 about a month before I replaced it. It had gotten much worse than the picture by then.
The B-44-4X tubing has done better, but is starting to look bad after only 2.5 months.

I think part of the issue with my system is that it is under full CPU and GPU load 24/7, and was in some relatively high ambient conditions over the summer.
For the price of Tygon tubing, I expected it to hold up better with 34-38ºC water flowing through it though...

The discoloration of the tubing doesn't actually bother me, but the micro channels of my CPU and GPU blocks get fouled with plasticizer, which IS a problem.
