MSI R6970 dual monitor and temperature question

I noticed if I connect one 1920x1080 monitor my temps are 40C idle. When I connect a 2nd monitor it jumps 10C to 50C idle. Is this a bug? or is it the more monitors and higher the resolution I use the higher the temps?

One more thing, if I decide to OC my R6970 should I connect only 1 monitor first, get the card stable before connecting more monitors? Or is a high OC unstable for multi-monitor setups?

I have a powercolor 6970 and is the same thing... Once you have 2 monitors, the card goes to 500mhz speed...

Edit: mine is already OC from factory to 940mhz. smile.gif

Well to answer your first question my r6950(70 fully unlocked@faster than stock 6970 clocks) also increased by about the same. I went from ~46 to ~55 c when I hooked up my 1920x1080 and my 1440x900 at idle. I do think the increased desktop resolution bumped your temps up. As far as OCing I'm not entirely sure. . . I OCed with both my monitors hooked up but I didn't really try with one monitor. Would be a good thing to test!

Ok, if you OC'ed your MSI with dual monitors connected then I believe I should be fine leaving both my monitors connected. I thought leaving multi-monitors connected while overclocking would affect the OC.

I'm seeing other owners reaching 1.1GHz core easily on this card.

i think its pretty fair to say 10 degrees temp jump should be normal... your gpu is now taking on two separate monitors and everything that is taking place on them. ..more stress = more heat wink.gif

Makes sense, I'm just thinking if I connected three 2560x1600 or 1920x1200 monitors would the same math apply, 10C for each monitor or 10C for every 1920x1200 resolution.

That's very normal. Once you connect two or more monitors the idle 2D clocks are raised higher to avoid flickerings. Easy test, remove all monitors but one connected, you will see lower 2D clocks and lower idle temperature.
